After I read Matthew Borczon’s A Clock of Human Bones, the “over there” of the war in Afghanistan was right here and I couldn’t look away. I flinched and winced, and I cried. These poems are plain-spoken, powerful. They are haunting because the poet himself is haunted with what he failed to accomplish - saving more people as a nurse in a combat hospital. In Mr. Borczon’s poem “Hypervigilance” he clearly states what he wanted (“…I would go to Afghanistan to help people…”) and how it did not happen, at least not to the extent he wished for. All the poems in this collection lament this terrible truth. There is nothing gratuitous or overdone in the language or the imagery. But nothing is simple either. And that is what makes these poems so deep and beautiful. I would say to Mr. Borczon that what he set out to do by going to Afghanistan was not in vain…his work is proof of that.

It will tear at your stomach, heart, and soul, as you look into the thoughts of a man who has endured the most inhuman events, all the while, attempting to hold onto his humanity. Thank you for helping me to begin to understand what others have been unable to explain to me.

Borczon takes my television/movie view of war as a "What a cute boy" in contrast to his visceral no holds falling out of bed raw sex. This is not my father's was, not my mother's poetry. Not to be forgotten.
