A Lingering Sense of Hope
By stefanie
'Until Angels Close My Eyes' is yet another example of Lurlene McDaniel's notoriously melancholy novels. As in her other books, McDaniels is able to portray a sorrowful mood through the characters. However, the final outcome is both depressing and uplifting at the same time. Had the book not had a little hope to cling on to at the end, I wouldn't have enjoyed reading it, but it did. The final message was that in the end, not all was lost.
Leah Lewis-Hall is a seventeen year old english teenager living with her mother and stepfather, Neil. Neil was Leah's mom's fourth and favorite husband, so Leah hoped he was around to stay. She was looking forward to living the rest of her life with just her, Neil, and her mother, that is until she was shot down with devastating news. Neil has cancer. A malignant cancer that could threaten his life. Leah liked Neil, a lot, and didn't want to see yet another father figure dissappear from her life, especially one she cared about so much. On top of that heart-breaking news, Leah had to face the reality that the cancer she once had could also return. So Leah had to live in constant fear of two lives being lost, hers, but mainly Neil's.
There was only one person that provided Leah with the comfort she needed to get through it all. Ethan, her sandy-haired, blue-eyed Amish boyfriend. She had met Ethan last summer while working in an Amish community, and instantly they fell in love with each other. The only problem was that Ethan was Amish, and Leah was English. The two worlds clashed immensly and there was a huge barrier inbetween the two cultures. Lately, Ethan had been experimenting with English ways, dressing English, and even moving out of his Amish household to live with Leah and her family. Leah and Ethan both knew their love was genuine and pure, and they both needed and cherished this love. But they also knew that this culture barrier between them could cause problems for both of their lives. Can Ethan and Leah's love hang tough through the biggest hurdeles of their lives? Can they defy the barrier between their two seperate worlds?
Although there is almost a sad tone throughout the whole book, there are instances that shine through with hope. For example, the angel Gabriella that saves Leah from her cancer, and the changed view from Leah on her mother. At the end of the novel, Leah had a new respect for her mother that came from all of her past and recent experiences. I enjoyed reading this novel because McDaniel balanced Neil's deteriorating cancer condition with certain episodes of hope that made you want to keep reading. The questions,"Will Neil live or die?" and, "Will Leah and Ethans love be able to hang tough?" are not really answered until the last few chapters. This factor makes 'Until Angels Close My Eyes' a quick read that you won't want to put down. My advice is, if you've never seen somebody turn something negative into a postive thing, read this book!!

Until Angels Close My Eyes was a very heart-warming novel
By A Customer
Leah is a strong young lady who is trying to complete the puzzle of her life that has never been finished. When she was sixteen-years-old she was diagnosed of bone cancer and the only thing she could hope for was a miracle, but instead she received the light of angels. After a while everything in Leah's life was going fine till she received the news that her loving stepfather, Neil had cancer. Leah didn't know what to do with herself, so she decided she needed a brake and to visit her true love Ethan at the Amish community. Ethan chose to make one of the most effective changes in his and Leah's life that left Leah in a complex situation that made her realize the reality ahead of her.

Until Angels Close my Eyes is an amazing book to read it pulls you in and gives you the picture of Leah's life. McDaniel made the characters and plot so realistic that I felt as if I was standing there with Leah and watching her grow into the strong young women she really is thought out the story.

Until Angels Close My Eyes is a beautiful story about love and what it takes to reach it. I would recommend this outstanding novel to anyone and everyone. If you enjoyed one of the books from the Angels Trilogy you would definitely take pleasure in this one. You also might end this book in tears.

WIll Their Love Last?
By Amber
The book, Until Angels Close My Eyes by Lurlene McDaniel is a great book. Leah (main character) thinks her battle with cancer is over, but the disease that haunts her past has struck someone she loves. Leah finds comfort in a visit to Amish country to see Ethan. Ethan (boyfriend) is changing, his taste in what community he wants to live in. Can their love stay together through all these changes??
On a rating, one through five, five being the best, I would rate this book a four. It was a great book, but it could have had a little more development in the beginning it was kind of slow. There could have been not so much background information. Once it started to pick-up, I couldn't put it down. The author had a great story line. It was realistic, easy to fallow, and I could put myself in Leah's position. You could tell she put a lot of effort in her book. I thought the description of the cancer was very in-depth. She used all the terms in which the doctors would really use. Not just in this book, but also in all of her books I have read.

Starting Point, 1979-1996, by Hayao Miyazaki

The first of a pair of memoirs in collection form, featuring essays, interviews, and even a brief comic on the history of airline food, from the master animator.

In the first two decades of his career, filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki laid the groundwork for his legendary movies. Starting Point is a collection of essays, interviews, and memoirs that go back to the roots of Miyazaki's childhood, the formulation of his theories of animation, and the founding of Studio Ghibli.

Before directing such acclaimed films as Spirited Away, Miyazaki was just another salaried animator, but with a vision of his own. Follow him as he takes his first steps on the road to success, experience his frustrations with the manga and animation industries that often suffocate creativity, and realize the importance of bringing the childhood dreams of the world to life. Starting Point: 1979-1996 is not just a chronicle of the life of a man whose own dreams have come true, it is a tribute to the power of the moving image.

A great, complex read
By Amazon Customer
Starting Point: 1979-1996 is an amazing book. It's a heavy read, with essays covering everything from Miyazaki's works, to philosophy and religion, Japanese economy and the life of an animator and so much more. I found it a contradictory, frustrating and often pessimistic read but also to be incredibly fascinating and honest. It adds a whole new dimension to the man we know in Miyazaki. He's a genius as an animator but it seems he must be a terribly unfulfilled person in real life (he missed much of his children's lives due to his workaholic attitude). The book could do with some more pictures and maybe more information on his Nausicaa manga but otherwise it's a brilliant, if not always a happy read. I hope Viz Media release the sequel - Turning Point: 1997-2008, sometime in the near future. Highly recommended for Miyazaki fans. 5/5

A Must-Read For All Miyazaki Fans
By Johanna
I bought Starting Point at the beginning of this year as material for a research paper I was writing on three of Hayao Miyazaki's films. Since then, I have read the entire thing and reread multiple portions of this extraordinary book. It became an invaluable resource for me as I wrote my paper, but it was also a very enjoyable and personal book. Over the course of the weeks it took me to finish it, I felt like I actually got to know Hayao Miyazaki. As I told several people, Starting Point is definitely the best book I have purchased in a very long time, and so far it is the best thing I have read this year. With all the wonderful essays, interviews, directorial memos, and even drawings it contains, I'm surprised there hasn't been more hype about it. It is an absolute must-read for any Miyazaki fan. I can't believe we had to wait more than fifteen years for this book to be translated and published in the United States (it was first published in Japan in 1996).

The book, which is nearly 500 pages long, has been divided into several parts and includes a foreword by John Lasseter (director of Toy Story) and an afterword by Isao Takahata (director of Grave of the Fireflies). The first part, entitled "On Creating Animation" is perhaps the most technical part of the book. Even though many of Miyazaki's thoughts on animation and film techniques were a bit over my head, I still enjoyed reading those chapters and thinking about them. Miyazaki's writing style is simple enough that I didn't feel swept away by too much jargon or overly-technical terms. For filmmakers and those interested in how animation works, this part of the book will be fascinating. The second part, called "On The Periphery of the Work" was similar to the previous section in that it contained chapters about animation techniques. However, Miyazaki mainly writes about his thoughts on various animated films. He also includes some very short essays like "The Tokyo I Love" that almost feel like journal entries. Part three, "People", is full of essays about individuals who have helped, inspired, and even irritated Miyazaki. Two of my favorites are "I Left Raising Our Children To My Wife" and "My Old Man's Back." These are both very vulnerable essays about some of the people closest to Miyazaki, and reading them almost brought tears to my eyes.

"A Story in Color" and part of "My Favorite Things" give the reader a short break from the text with a comic and some illustrations. "Dining in Midair" is a charming and sometimes amusing comic about the history of in-flight dining. Scrapbooks No. 1 - 3 in the beginning of "My Favorite Things" display some pictures of flying machines, tanks, and cars, and also a very short illustrated story called "I Want A Garden Like This." Then we are back to more essays for the remaining part of "Favorite Things." My favorite essay in this section is "My Random Thoughts Notebook Is My Hobby." This one made me laugh because I expected it to be an essay about Miyazaki's random thoughts notebook. However, it was simply a piece full of disjointed thoughts, memories, and observations.

"Planning Notes; Directorial Memoranda" was a nice inclusion and the directorial memos were fun to read. For those who want more details about some of their favorite Miyazaki films like Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, and Princess Mononoke, this section is for them. Although the memos are fairly short, I found them fascinating and enjoyable. However, for those who really want depth and insight into their favorite films, "Works" is the part to flip to. This section has a lot of information on Miyazaki's earlier works, like Lupin III, Future Boy Conan, and Panda! Go Panda! I had not heard of any of these before reading the book, but reading the chapter on Lupin was what convinced me to watch the film Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro, which was excellent. "Works" also has quite a few extensive chapters on Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbor Totoro, and Castle in the Sky. Miyazaki focuses on Nausicaä especially in several chapters, one of my favorites being an interview titled "Nature Is Both Generous and Ferocious."

All in all, this book was excellent and I am very pleased to have it in my library. I have heard rumors that Viz Media might be publishing Miyazaki's later book Turning Point: 1997 - 2008 soon, and I hope that is the case. Much as I enjoyed this book, I would love to read more about Miyazaki's later works like Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Ponyo. In the meantime, I plan to read this book over and over again, and I encourage anyone interested in Miyazaki's works (or even just interested in film and animation) to pick up a copy.

The vision of a genius
By klo_dude
Hayao Miyazaki is considered one of the best directors of animation history.
That easily is the best reason of why to buy this book. Covering the sursprisingly amount of 500 pages, Starting Point (in a beatiful edition by Viz Media) icludes not only all the essays and commentaries written by Miyazaki between 1979 and 1996, but also integrates a lot of skecthes, cartoons and rare drawings of the famous director. Not only that, but the biggest catch of the book is discovering that Miyazaki, as what it is (a genius), it's also a complex individual and a likeable writer. His opinions included in this book, cover a wide variety of topics: the history of Japan, animation principles, evolution of the anime industry, his personal life, opinions of society, ecology, war and even life.

Starting Point is a provoking and complex read. The opinions of Miyazaki may come as overly extreme or controversial, but in his broad vision of the world is clear that he makes his animated movies with passion and care for the children (which are his intended audience). Viz Media deserves a price for this hardcover edition, the design and quality is top-notch and includes a brief, but insightful introduction by John Lasseter and an Afterword, by the also amazing director, Isao Takahata -from Grave of the Fireflies fame-.

A recommended read by fans of anime, animation or Studio Ghibli and a must-buy by animation students.

Well laid out. Very detailed.
By Amazon Customer
I unwisely decided to take a semester-in-a-month class. Which means I'm having to read and digest (ha ha) this textbook at the speed of light. The good news is, this textbook is extremely well laid out.

The text gives you a short 5-question pre-quiz before you start a chapter, to test how much you THINK you know about nutrition. Then it gives you some chapter objectives and tells you where those objectives are covered in the text. The textbook is extremely packed with information and is not light reading. But they break the chapters down into headings and subheadings, and recap every section in a clear and easy to understand way. The chapters are followed by math examples to help you calculate nutrition needs, a review summary and additional test questions and case profiles. There are a lot of graphics and charts inside that also help you to understand the material.

But don't think you can read the summaries and skate by with the text. At least not if you're new to the sciences and nutrition. In addition to digestion basics (which are extremely complex) they cover a lot of ancillary areas, such as diseases affecting the GI tract and those diseases that are contributed to by poor nutrition.

I rented the textbook but think I will buy because I think it will be a helpful resource down the road as well since I have at least 2 more nutrition courses I'm required to take.

Not light reading by any stretch, but a rock-solid text.

Easy to read and follow
By LisaD
Easy to read and follow. Rented it for online classes and it arrived within a week. There were very little marks inside. I've only seen 2 words written in it by other people and I'm half way through it.

Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are?, by Frans de Waal

A New York Times Bestseller

From world-renowned biologist and primatologist Frans de Waal, a groundbreaking work on animal intelligence destined to become a classic.

What separates your mind from an animal’s? Maybe you think it’s your ability to design tools, your sense of self, or your grasp of past and future―all traits that have helped us define ourselves as the planet’s preeminent species. But in recent decades, these claims have eroded, or even been disproven outright, by a revolution in the study of animal cognition. Take the way octopuses use coconut shells as tools; elephants that classify humans by age, gender, and language; or Ayumu, the young male chimpanzee at Kyoto University whose flash memory puts that of humans to shame. Based on research involving crows, dolphins, parrots, sheep, wasps, bats, whales, and of course chimpanzees and bonobos, Frans de Waal explores both the scope and the depth of animal intelligence. He offers a firsthand account of how science has stood traditional behaviorism on its head by revealing how smart animals really are, and how we’ve underestimated their abilities for too long.

People often assume a cognitive ladder, from lower to higher forms, with our own intelligence at the top. But what if it is more like a bush, with cognition taking different forms that are often incomparable to ours? Would you presume yourself dumber than a squirrel because you’re less adept at recalling the locations of hundreds of buried acorns? Or would you judge your perception of your surroundings as more sophisticated than that of a echolocating bat? De Waal reviews the rise and fall of the mechanistic view of animals and opens our minds to the idea that animal minds are far more intricate and complex than we have assumed. De Waal’s landmark work will convince you to rethink everything you thought you knew about animal―and human―intelligence.

“A passionate and convincing case for the sophistication of nonhuman minds.” (Alison Gopnik - The Atlantic)

“A thoughtful and easy read, packed with information stemming from detailed empirical research, and one of de Waal's most comparative works that goes well beyond the world of nonhuman primates with whom he's most familiar.” (Marc Bekoff - Psychology Today)

“A fascinating history of the study of animal behavior and cognition.” (Bark)

“This is a remarkable book by a remarkable scientist. Drawing on a growing body of research including his own, de Waal shows that animals, from elephants and chimpanzees to the lowly invertebrates, are not only smarter than we thought, but also engaged in forms of thought we have only begun to understand.” (Edward O. Wilson, University Professor Emeritus, Harvard University)

Accent the possible
By David Wineberg
There is (yet another) fight raging in science. This one is over how we evaluate other vertebrates. In this fascinating and eye-opening compendium, Frans de Waal says we are prejudiced towards ourselves, always comparing animals’ performance to ours, in unfairly biased experiments designed for us. It bothers people that we are not unique, and it bothers de Waal that animals don’t get the credit they deserve. Ranging all over the world and all over species, the book is an endless marvel.

de Waal gives the example of a chimp named Ayumu at a research center in Japan, who can routinely memorize nine numbers in any given order, having seen them for just one fifth of one second. He can then pick them out in order from random numbers presented to him all over the computer screen. No human comes close. That’s a problem for a lot of scientists. The book is full of examples of animals, birds and fish doing highly intelligent things naturally. Our tests twist and pervert their skills to fit the test, showing them less intelligent than they are. We draw the wrong conclusions, often by asking the wrong questions. de Waal shows the way to a far more appreciative and objective way of looking at the world.

My own favorite story in prejudice occurred when scientists induced pain in the feet of mice to see if they could be made to hide it. They found that mice could put on a brave face, but only when a human male tended to them. For females, they let their guard down; they freely showed their suffering. The difference was so strong that it worked even when scientists simply placed a man’s t-shirt near the cage. The mice were totally focused on fear and ignored their own pain. This said two things: mice could hide their own pain, and every experiment using mice is to some extent invalid, prejudiced by the mere presence of humans. Male or female scientists will cause different results.

To that story, de Waal adds attention, motivation, and especially cognition, giving animals the full range of unlimited possibility, including communication (bottlenose dolphins call to each other by name). It is actually true respect. Possibly the most telling sentence about primates (de Waal’s focus) is that the caretakers in a primate center have greater respect for the intelligence of the animals than do the psychologists and philosophers who run the experiments.

Every being is magnificently adapted to its habitat and needs. That they have different strengths, some or none of which might also be present in humans, is basically irrelevant. The whole field of comparative psychology, where we test how animals measure up to humans, is irrelevant and invalid. We need to appreciate the possible, not the comparative.

Insightful
By Book Shark
Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are? By Frans de Waal

“Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are?” is an insightful look at animal intelligence backed up by evidence from controlled experiments. Dutch/American biologist with a Ph.D. in zoology and ethology and author of Our Inner Ape and others, Frans de Waal, takes the reader on a journey of the sophistication of nonhuman minds. This entertaining 352-page book includes the following nine chapters: 1. Magic Wells, 2. A Tale of Two Schools, 3. Cognitive Ripples, 4. Talk to Me, 5. The Measure of all Things, 6. Social Skills, 7. Time Will Tell, 8. Of Mirrors and Jars, and 9. Evolutionary Cognition.

Positives:
1. Engaging and well-written book that is accessible to the masses.
2. A fascinating topic in the hands of a subject matter expert, nonhuman cognition.
3. Entertaining and insightful. The book is easy to follow. Professor de Waal is fair and even handed. He is careful to not oversell nonhuman cognition while providing a mixture of stories, experiments and observations to back his points. “I will pick and choose from among many discoveries, species, and scientists, so as to convey the excitement of the past twenty years.”
4. Includes many sketches that complement the excellent narrative.
5. Introduces and explains key new terms. “Umwelt stresses an organism’s self-centered, subjective world, which represents only a small tranche of all available worlds.”
6. Does a wonderful job of explaining the most important topic of this book, animal cognition. “No wonder Griffin became an early champion of animal cognition—a term considered an oxymoron until well into the 1980s—because what else is cognition but information processing? Cognition is the mental transformation of sensory input into knowledge about the environment and the flexible application of this knowledge.” “While the term cognition refers to the process of doing this, intelligence refers more to the ability to do it successfully.”
7. A look into experimental science. “The credo of experimental science remains that an absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.”
8. One of the recurring themes of this wonderful book is the importance of conducting well-constructed experiments. “Their earlier poor performance had had more to do with the way they were tested than with their mental powers.” “The challenge is to find tests that fit an animal’s temperament, interests, anatomy, and sensory capacities.”
9. A fascinating look at the field of evolutionary cognition. “The field of evolutionary cognition requires us to consider every species in full.”
10. One of the most important topics covered is the notion of continuity. “It is far more logical to assume continuity in every domain, Griffin said, echoing Charles Darwin’s well-known observation that the mental difference between humans and other animals is one of degree rather than kind.”
11. Explains key differences between behaviorism and ethology. “The difference between behaviorism and ethology has always been one of human-controlled versus natural behavior. Behaviorists sought to dictate behavior by placing animals in barren environments in which they could do little else than what the experimenter wanted.”
12. The book provides interesting examples that includes animals beyond de Waal’s expertise of primates. “With animals such as chimpanzees, elephants, and crows, for which we have ample evidence of complex cognition, we really do not need to start at zero every time we are struck by seemingly smart behavior.”
13. Provocative questions. Do animals have culture? Find out.
14. Provides evidence for animal cognition. “A century ago Wolfgang Köhler set the stage for animal cognition research by demonstrating that apes can solve problems in their heads by means of a flash of insight, before enacting the solution.” “Apes do not just search for tools for specific occasions; they actually fabricate them.”
15. The pioneers of animal cognition. “Nadia Ladygina-Kohts was a pioneer in animal cognition, who studied not only primates but also parrots, such as this macaw. Working in Moscow at around the same time that Köhler conducted his research, she remains far less known.”
16. The amazing story of Ayumu. “Ayumu’s photographic memory allows him to quickly tap a series of numbers on a touchscreen in the right order, even though the numbers disappear in the blink of an eye. That humans cannot keep up with this young ape has upset some psychologists.”
17. An interesting look at social skills. “The cooperative pulling paradigm, as it is known, has been applied to monkeys, hyenas, parrots, rooks, elephants, and so on.” “In the end, we found proof in the pudding that chimpanzees are highly cooperative. They have no trouble whatsoever regulating and dampening strife for the sake of achieving shared outcomes.”
18. Do animals plan ahead? “This study was quite ingenious and included a few additional controls, leading the authors to conclude that jays recall what items they have put where and at what point in time.” “Lisala, a bonobo, carries a heavy rock on a long trek toward a place where she knows there are nuts. After collecting the nuts, she continues her trek to the only large slab of rock in the area, where she employs her rock as a hammer to crack the nuts. Picking up a tool so long in advance suggests planning.”
19. The intelligence of elephants. “In short, elephants make sophisticated distinctions regarding potential enemies to the point that they classify our own species based on language, age, and gender. How they do so is not entirely clear, but studies like these are beginning to scratch the surface of one of the most enigmatic minds on the planet.”
20. The three divided attitudes on animal cognition: slayers, skeptics, and the proponents.
21. Notes and bibliography included.

Negatives:
1. The scientific process needed to be explained in more detail and specifically how it relates to the study of primates. An appendix explaining de Waal’s overall scientific approach would have been helpful.
2. Lacks supplementary visual materials such as diagrams, charts and graphs. A chart depicting the different types of primates with key statistics as an example. Maps showing where the main subjects come from.
3. On the topic of neuroscience a little more depth was warranted. Once again, visual material would have complemented the narrative.
4. The format could have been enhanced to highlight the most noteworthy observations or facts.

In summary, this was a very entertaining book. Professor De Waal succeeds in entertaining and educating the public on animal cognition. His mastery of the topic is admirable and is careful to be grounded on the facts and not to oversell an idea. A lot of interesting insights don’t miss this one. I recommend it!

When I die, give my body to the crows...
By Woody
De Waal mostly confirms what I already thought: animals do indeed participate in their own cultures and lack of similarity to ours is no reason to disparage the idea that animals display their own intelligence that may or may not be congruent with humans'. It reminds me of a point I always made to my history students: illiteracy does not make a person unintelligent. Likewise, just because animals approach their own societies differently from our approach does not imply lack of culture. De Waal provides a ton of evidence, both quantitative and anecdotal, to support his and others' thesis about animal intelligence. I have a newly reinforced respect especially for crows and their kin. I just hope the murder who inhabits my local park doesn't see me as a jerk. De Waal may have also made me rethink my relationship with the meat on my plate.

By R. Schmidt
It would be difficult for me to disagree more than I do with the first reviewer. I used Surgical Recall as a medical student. I used Adavanced Surgical Recall as a resident. When I started fellowship several years after practicing general surgery I bought a new edition of Advanced Surgical Recall. This book has consistently been my "go to" source for general surgical pearls for over ten years.

I understand that the previous reviewer wants an electronic version, but the true benefit of this book is being able to conceal the answers and test yourself. Also there have been numerous studies showing that hard copy materials foster more retention than electronic ones.

If you are a medical student, an intern on a general surgery rotation, or an early general surgery resident this book will get you to answer 95% or more of your attendings' pimp questions. As a staff surgeon I consider this book to be the yard stick I measure resident knowledge by - if it's in Recall, you HAVE to know it - if you don't I am riding you pretty hard. As I used several sources to study for my ABSITEs and boards (including Recall) I cannot say which one was my favorite for board review. I do know that for the other 364 days of the year when there is not an ABSITE this should be the book you are carrying with you.

By KTinNYC
Really LWW? Not formatted for Kindle on iPhone? As an extremely busy surgical resident, do you honestly think I'm going to have time to read/use this book any other way? I would have been all over it, having seen an older print version of the book as a med student. But no iPhone formatting means I'll stick to something else- If I'm going to lug around an actual BOOK, it will certainly be Comprehensive ABSITE Review by Fiser, not this one.

Just wow
By Terri Chase
The movie of 9 1/2 weeks was on TV (haven't seen the movie in decades) and I noticed the line "based on the book..." I looked up Elizabeth McNeill in the Kindle book dept and bought the book. The book is amazingly well written and incredible that it is something of an autobiography. It must have taken a lot of courage to relive her experiences while writing the pages. It's a great story of the lure a D/s relationship can have and the warning of what it can do to not only one's body but soul.
It's a quick read but I don't feel like I've been cheated. I can feel the author through her words and that is enough. Intense.

not a love story at all.
By laura g.
I like the memoir of the writer, Elizabeth McNeill. very unusual read. It is not a love story for those of you out there considering buying it . Its more of a sad story about a regular mid 30s woman living in NYC and a guy whom you think is kinda ok, but quickly it turns dark. I think the story is based on true events in her life that happened to her for a couple months of her life, but this strange relationship messed with her finally she had enough and ended it. My personal opinion is that it could easily happen to anyone looking for love, but ending up with the wrong person. Not a happy story at all. just want to be clear about that. thank you.

Interesting perspective,but boring
By Amazon Customer
I was curious about this book as I've heard so much about it. The story was interesting, how this woman allowed this man to completely dominate her, and coming from her perspective. That is why I don't give it 1 star. But too, there was pages and pages that I skipped over, like about 10 pages of her searching through his closets and drawers. I don't see what is interesting about that. I won't ever pick up this book again, as a matter of fact, I threw it away. It wasn't what I expected. I am curious to see how the movie goes, though, and will most likely rent that. It was the author's way of talking too, where you didn't know who was saying what. I can't imagine going through this though, and was horrified by what he had her do. The scene where he has her dressing as a man would have been my limit. That grossed me out. Then the prostitute scene was too much. I'm in no way a prude, but the book bored me.
