This is my memoir . . . . It’s me telling you about my fake problems in life and a few real ones. It’s a book about comedy, and how I came up from the dusty roads of Arizona with my OP shorts and my blond fluffy hair, to the mean streets of Beverly Hills, with nothing but a few props in my mom’s old honeymoon suitcase and a couple of dry jokes.

These are the stories I tell my friends at dinner when I’m drunk, and they dart their eyes around hoping a waiter will interrupt me. 

Me blabbering on about how I lost my virginity, how I got into stand-up, meeting Johnny Carson, making Tommy Boy with Farlz, and getting beat up while wearing a Coneheads T-shirt. Sound stupid? Maybe! Read and find out.

About the Author

David Spade is an actor, comedian, and writer. A former cast member of Saturday Night Live, Spade has also starred in the films Tommy Boy, Black Sheep, and the Joe Dirt and Grown Ups franchises. He was nominated for an Emmy, two Golden Globes, and an American Comedy Award for his role on NBC’s Just Shoot Me! He also won a participation award for being in show business. That’s the one he’s most proud of. He lives in Los Angeles, California.

Good read despite an unwelcome left turn.

This was a funny and casually well-written book, a good read But it's a little frustrating because it abandons the "narrative," if you will, without finishing it. The first 2/3 of the book deal with Spade's upbringing, his grind through the comedy club scene, and his slow climb from SNL writer to SNL performer. Even though it's written with a light touch, that stuff is all pretty compelling. But it drops that thread after he's made it as an SNL cast member. It doesn't tell the story of what prompted him to leave SNL, or his movie career (except for Tommy Boy), or his experience on sitcoms. Instead, the last 1/3 of the book morphs into more of a George Carlin "Brain Droppings" type thing -- little observational essays on miscellaneous topics ranging from doing cocaine to his thoughts on dating tricks that women pull. I would have been really interested to hear why he made the jump from SNL when he did (given how hard his climb there was) and whether he's happy or not with his sitcom and movie work. The guy writes so well and so honestly about his career that I certainly could have read a lot more of it. But still, this is an entertaining read and I'd recommend it for anyone who likes a fun, self-aware memoir.

but I love David Spade. Love that he's acerbic, love that he seems somewhat shy but he's really inside his head thinking 'What the hell?' all the time...love that he is like the younger brother that constantly looks out for everyone even though everyone is older and should know better...
This isn't a show-stopper book. That doesn't seem to be his style. This is a nice read, about a nice boy, that made it thru some rough stuff, and now his life is nice again. Kudos to your life, David Spade!

Weak sauce

I really enjoyed Spade on SNL, so this was a must have book.
He was there when it was really hopping and firing on all cylinders.
The book is mildly interesting on his early years, and how he really struggled to make it to SNL.
The portions about when he was actually on the show are the best. He could have probably made an entire book about THAT.
Instead, he glosses over a lot of what would seem to be a gold mine of behind the scenes information, then abruptly stops, and basically limps to the end.
I admit I didn't follow his career after SNL, so maybe it wasn't that interesting to HIM either.
I'm giving him a "C", and that's generous.
Not worth the money.

This was a pleasant surprise! I've been wanting to read Maisey Yates for a while now, and this freebie seemed like a good place to start.

I'm so glad I did! The writing was excellent, and I was surprised by how this short novella packed quite the punch! It was sweet, hot, and emotional.

Best friends to lovers isn't one of my favorite tropes because there's never enough tension for me. I was proven wrong with this one, and that makes me incredibly happy.

I'm definitely going to check out the rest of the series!

Take me. Back to English class.

I didn't judge this book by its cover. It took a whole four paragraphs to realize I was going to hate it. Here's the fourth paragraph:

"Thanks to Travis Beringer. Who had wandered away from her at some point during the party. Probably looking to get kissed under the mistletoe. Which was the hazard of bringing a date who would never really be your date."

Normally I don't like to isolate direct quotes in a review because ripping them out of context is unfair, but here context is unnecessary. Do you see the problem? There are no complete sentences there, only fragments. The ENTIRE book is like that. First person narration doesn't have to mean disjointed stream-of-consciousness writing. (See the infinitely better "Intrusion" by Charlotte Stein for an example of first person done right.)

What about the story itself? For a minute I thought a compelling mystery was going to come out of the tragic event that kicks off the book, but no. The friend's messy death is just an excuse for the leads to go to a hotel and have boring sex.

Don't bother with this one.

Loved It!

What a way to start a trilogy! Take Me is the prequel to this series. The stage is set and the next three books will lead up to the conclusion. This novella is about best friends Travis Beringer and Sydney Davis and how their relationship revolves after the shocking death of Sydney's roommate at a Christmas party in 2004. I look forward to following the chain of events in the coming books.

The narration has the feel of early newsreels where the broadcaster described unknown phenomena in clipped, clinical language: "A strange force passed through the wet ants. They were stunned senseless and blown out of the holes like bullets from a gun." The resilient ants and the eerie landscapes are portrayed in strong black-and-white images, enriched by deep brown, purple, slate, gold and steely blue colors; Van Allsburg, playing with perspective, creates marvelous contrasts and images. Grade 1-5 In this brief tale of the adventures of two runaway ants, Van Allsburg once again gives children a visual puzzle to solvein this case identifying common household appliances from an ant's point of view. When a troop of ants are sent to retrieve sugar crystals from a kitchen, two ants stay behind to feast and go to sleep in the sugar bowl. When morning comes they are successively stirred into a cup of coffee, almost swallowed, toasted with an english muffin, whirled through a garbage disposal, and stunned senseless in an electrical outlet. While some children will enjoy identifying the highly magnified objects, others will wonder how the ants have managed to survive any one of these disasters. The highly linear, hard-edged drawings look like fine etchings which have been magnifieda technique which enhances the sense of being reduced to ant size. The colors applied in flat fields are primarily limited to earth tones and gray, combined with touches of pure white and black in lines and fields of almost luminous intensity. The intensity of the visual experience overpowers the story, which is a flat, rather cold vehicle, an excuse for a visual game which will appeal to the intellect of children older than typical picture book readers. Perfect.

My great nephew is 7 years old and his class at school has a secret reader which is a students relative. I knew a few months ahead of time I would be the secret reader for April 11, 2013. I search on line for a great book and the title of the book caught my eye. I read the other reviews and it sounded perfect for his 1st grade class.

It was a hit the children in his class were very tentative with every word I read they loved the book from cover to cover. It was just perfect. It made my day that they were so pleased and my
great nephew just loved it. He was squarming in his seat with excitement waiting to see what was going to happen to the Two Bad Ants.

Striking artwork, captivating story

First, the organization that shipped is top-notch--timely, everything in great condition.
Second, I pull this book out whenever ants appear in our classroom, once or twice a year. It's a good reminder to clean up after ourselves carefully (not just because an adult requested!). This book also offers a lovely way to consider perspective. Children spontaneously suggested what they thought the moral of the story might be, even though a moral is not emphasized in the book. It's a favorite... children love to hear it more than once.

This is a hilarious book about size and the BIG WORLD, and also about the reason for following rules.

Two ants start out on a journey to retrieve a blissfully, wonderful substance to feed the queen, and end up "playing hookie." Their funny antics, discovering the world of humans, lands them into one catastrophe after another.

As a read-aloud, you will have instant attention, and good for guessing what item is causing the ants to flounder.
As a reading level book, it's a sure thing for grade 2, or higher grade 1. Kids will love and identify with the characters, in size and antics.

About the Author
David Jobber is Professor of Marketing at the University of Bradford, School of Management. His research interests include the use of mail surveys in marketing research, selling and sales management. In 2008 he received the Academy of Marketing's Life Achievement award for distinguished and extraordinary services to marketing. Fiona-Ellis Chadwick is a Senior Lecturer at the Open University Business School, where she leads the Retail Management and Marketing programme. College Level Economics

OK, this is not a self-study workbook for the casual person. This is a rigorous, college text, and slogging through the material can be rather difficult. The heart is math. You need to know the equation y = mx + b, and how this appears on a graph.

I doubt that his book will work as an independent study book, since the material is presented in a rather stark and schematic matter. The descriptions on equations, graphs, and external factors, and how they interact can often become quite obscure and inscrutable. However, it does a fabulous job of having many examples on how a change in external factors or the equation can affect the graph, and vice versa, providing much illumination as a supplementary text to a standard text on macroeconomics that does a mediocre job of describing these phenomena.

It has these chapters:
2 on introductory stuff
6 on the IS-LM Framework
3 on aggregate supply and demand
3 on money supply, consumption, and business investment.

The Church Could Use More Books Like This

I have the good fortune of knowing the authors and some of the other people that stand behind both the content and the lived-out reality of the text. I titled this post "The Church Could Use More Books Like This," for 3 reasons.

1) This book isn't theory, it emerges from decades of experience and reflection. And not just any experience, but experience in the trenches of Post-Christian Britain. It's not a perfect symmetry, but in many ways, the United States is following quick on the cultural heels of Western Europe and we would do well to pay careful attention to the insights of our brothers and sisters who are seeking to live into the reality of God's Kingdom in that context.

2) The focus of this book is something that a great many of us should be embarrassed is not more central to our ecclesiologies, discipleship. For far too long, discipleship has been seen as an add-on to the life of our churches. The assumption of these authors, however, is that churches actually only exist for one single purpose, to make disciples of Jesus. They'll come right out and tell you that their way isn't the only way to go about it, but they are unrelenting in their assertion that creating a discipling culture is imperative to a healthy identity and life for local congregations.

3) The final reason the Church needs more books like this is because it will provoke important questions. Vested readers are sure to find their margins filled with marks and notes. The assumptions and conclusions in this book emerge from a theological perspective which, though not fully unpacked here, will undoubtedly result in readers discovering that they may need to rethink some of their own perspectives and paradigms in order to really receive what the authors are saying and doing. For those who just want to extract a model and language to use in the context of another "church program," I suppose that's possible, but it would be an exercise in missing the point.

This is a great book that it written in such a way that it is accessible to any and all who are interested in thinking through what it might mean and look like for their church to build a discipling culture.

A good book on discipling yourself with some odd shapes thrown in

As a book on personal discipleship, that is reflecting on how I worship, pray, and work in God's kingdom around me, Building a Discipling Culture is excellent. The author has some unique and Bible-based insight around all parts of how we relate to God and the world around us. I especially liked his section on prayer that for the first time, for me anyway, really took the Lord's prayer and used it as a structure for daily prayer. It seemed to address how God would have us a pray much more completely then, say, the ACTS approach.

The other breakthrough I had with this book was personal gifts. Mr. Cockram presents the five gifts of Apostle, Pastor, Teacher, Prophet, and Evangelists. His concept that we have a dominant one but use all of them seems much more on-target than so many presentations on gifts. It is also interesting how he separates Pastor and Teacher. The explanation goes a long way in showing how we can all be pastors while most "pastors" are probably primarily teachers.

As a book about alternative ways to approach church, something I know it is used for, I found it a bit odd. The whole shapes approach is interesting but seems to create a new "secret language" of worship. Now instead of a "bullwark never failing" and various other churchy references, we can talk about the hexagon, circle, or various charts. The gifts, for example, are the five-fold ministries, the pentagon. He even goes so far as to say "this language should be the DNA....shared by you and the people you are discipling". I found it all too intentionally cryptic and think there is too much "secret, special" words we use amongst ourselves. Jesus didn't seem to do that (in fact, I don't even think he spoke in Greek which makes me wonder how all of his Aramaic words are better understood in Greek).

I think if Mr. Cockram had stuck with his core approach, personal discipleship, he would have produced a much more useful book. One final note. The test on personal gifts at the end is very good and is on the cusp of providing some very unique insight. But, unfortunately, it isn't explained how to interpret the results. I think that is a shame.

A new paradigm, not just another program

I've been a small group and discipleship pastor for nearly ten years now, and in that time I've seen lots of different theories and resources for how to develop discipleship systems. I've led the groups ministry for a large mega-church, for a small church plant, and I've listened to, coached and counseled churches of every size in between. In all my experience it is rare to find someone who's not just talking about a new process or program but a whole new paradigm on discipleship. This is what Mike Breen and the folks from 3DM are offering. These aren't just theories or abstract ideas; this is a book borne from the labor of leaders on the front lines working with one burning passion - to create growing disciples of Jesus Christ.

One caution: do not read this book as you might all the other small groups or discipleship resources out there. Do not go looking for the next "how to" book on creating a new program or system. You may even read this book and think, "So what. That seems too simple." But do not let the simplicity of the ideas obscure its power. Read the book, reflect on its ideas, and if you are stirred by the concepts presented, I suggest you find someone already implementing these ideas in their church and learn from them. You cannot put new wine in old wineskins, and you won't be able to apply many of the principles in this book without letting go of some of your existing paradigms. Seek out someone who can help you with that journey. We've greatly benefited from the learning of others who have walked this road ahead of us.

Grate companion

This is a comprehensive book on the subject of ENT/craniofacial surgery. Academic approach,well written, clear and detailed yet short and right to the point. Richly illustrated with a well appreciated, color-atlas in the end. Good prise, fits nicely in your pocket. Based on the disciplined germanic tradition, aiming to teach, rather then sell.

Poorly written

I'm a med student and got this for the final exam in ENT. I'm through the first 100 pages. When I flicked through the book in the store it looked great, when I started reading it a few weeks later it just gave me a headache. Simple concepts are explained in such convoluted ways that if you haven't read about them elsewhere beforehand it's unlikely that you will understand them by reading this book. The graphs and pictures are great, but it's just really poorly written. Do NOT recommend it. Especially not for med students, as it's also a bit too detailed as well.
