Advance Praise for What You Are For: Inciting A Revolution In Your Soul"What You Are For is a shaman's brew of poetic ayahuasca. A vine of soul, of death, of new life. To sit with these poetic, powerful lines is in itself a breaking open of our egos, their compromises and identifications which hold us back. This is a new kind of poetry. What the poet offers is medicine for the soul. Here we have shamanic poetry at its best, its freshest; a post-modern poetry that unites the old initiatory themes with crackling expressiveness. So read. Read and realize what you hold in your hand is a new-life-giving ceremony. This is Clarissa on rocket fuel. Enjoy!" --C. Michael Smith, Ph.D., author of Jung and Shamanism In Dialogue: Retrieving the Soul/ Retrieving the Sacred, and the award-winning, Psychotherapy and The Sacred

A Raw Authentic Healing Journey
By Kayla
I stumbled upon Melissa’s words when I needed them most, and have kept up with her work ever since. This living, breathing poetic medicine rings true in my bones, and has been a crucial part of my own personal healing. She is a rose-tongued wordsmith weaving words into a journey that leaves you with no choice but to finally honor that innermost part of you that has never had a voice. These words deliver heart-pounding inspiration to drop the mask and move from your core.

Melissa is a beacon of fearless authenticity. While most turn their backs on their shadow, she dances with it. This book is an invitation to join.

Provocations to Soulful Living
By Graham Mummery
In the acknowledgements, Melissa La Flamme mentions her friends on Facebook who have seen these poems before. As one of them, though not having met her in person, it is interesting to see how these poems and essays appear on the page.

In a Forward, the writer on Shamanism and Jungian psychology, C. Michael Smith, suggests this is a new kind of poetry. In some ways I am less sure about that. The Ancient Greeks and many other cultures looked to their poets for inspiration at dark times. The poet was seen as someone inspired by the elements, and there always has been a shamanic element to poetry. Hence La Flamme is writing within a vein that has always been there in poetry. But on the other hand, what we have here is put in a contemporary way. It is a poetry of today. In that sense it is a new kind of poetry. In one poem, La Flamme writes:

"This is your invitation
to drench
your life with the wild blood
of your Dream."

The poems are certainly a provocation to do that. Influenced as she says by many figures including psychologists like Jung, Grof, Hillman and others, as well as poets like Rilke, Neruda, Robert Bly and Mary Oliver, she takes the reader on a journey. As a poet she is perhaps less worried about conventions of modern poetry (which incidentally I love also). There is perhaps more telling in these poetry than the showing which writing workshops would tell you to do. But maybe in that there is more.

The biography of the author on the back describes her as a shaman and teacher as well as a psychotherapist. Sometimes we need inspiration to move on. Someone to urge is to become more, to embrace the messy, suffering of life and embrace what it is about. These poems do that. I can see them being read on self-development courses, like other poems from the likes of Steve Taylor and Oraiah Mountain Dreamer. And what a journey we are taken on. As La Flamme states:

"To muster the heart
to stretch to the edge of what beckons you
is your ticket to ride.
This is what you are for."

The poems are an incitement to live life to the full carried off with great gusto. What we do with it is, of course up to us. Hopefully we will take up the call to the life that Melissa La Flamme gives voice to. These poems and essays are a reminder of how exciting it could be.

Her words are medicine...
By Crista Holter
This book was gifted to me by a dear friend of mine, Melanie Carlin. It arrived in the mail unexpectedly and has turned out to be a huge transformational tool like no other I've ever received. Melissa's contemplative words are medicine for my soul. I was so impressed with her poem CODE BREAKER that I contacted her and asked if I could repost it on a website that I'm in the process of designing for my own personal wounded healer, Beth. The poem defined what it is that Beth does for me with precision. I just knew I had to try to contact Melissa and ask for her permission to post it on the home page of the www. platypus-studios.com website. I was pleasantly surprised by the connection I made that day with Melissa.

She shares poems from her heart on her Facebook page and tags me now... I LOVE that she's accessible. She's real! Her poems help me recognize my inherent birthright to live freely and wholly. A celebration of sensuality! An exploration of presence, beauty and mystery and a reminder to experience and participate in my life. With words like this... "darkly shimmering caves of your damp Dream" ...she reminds me to quit hiding and come out of my own darkly lit cave to be seen by the world but most importantly... myself.

If you find yourself alone and longing for words that will resonate... this is the book to turn to. These glorious words are the very medicine we need in this day and age to help us live our TRUE life's purpose. In addition to providing friendship, her book also teaches and heals my soul. I'm learning new ways to work with the healing power of poetry through this inspirational collection of words. They sparked the inner poet which resides inside of this vessel I have grown to hate and am learning to love - my beautiful body.

I started a Facebook fan page for like minded people who have been touched by her words in the same way I have. It's a beautiful community, full of shamanic energy! https://www.facebook.com/groups/whatyouarefor/

I fervently anticipate a time lapse of this photo where every Crystal is replaced with an equally powerful signature guided by spirit. It's a must read and we're passing it along.

Inside Out: A Personal History of Pink Floyd, by Nick Mason

Here, for the first time, is the story of Pink Floyd from the inside out. With 116 million albums sold worldwide and 25 years on the pop charts to their credit, Pink Floyd is one of the most successful rock groups in history, yet their story until now is one of the least known. The only continuous member of the band through its entire 40-year history, Nick Mason has witnessed every twist, turn, and sommersault from behind his drum kit. The journey begins with the band's origins as the darlings of London's late 1960s underground and the creation of the classic Pink Floyd sound, all the way through to The Wall and those legendary stadium shows. Here are the players who shaped the band's history and the story behind the story the inside perspective on, for example, the deterioration and departure of Syd Barrett; the overwhelming success of The Dark Side of the Moon and the resulting pressures and conflicts within the band, including the rift with Roger Waters; and Nick and David Gilmour's decision to put their reputations on the line and continue as Pink Floyd. Packed with rare photographs and vintage Floyd graphics from Nick Mason's extensive private archive, Inside Out is an eye-opener for both veteran fans and those just discovering the group. And, in keeping with the classic Floyd style, the book's cover was designed by Storm Thorgerson, creator of such iconic images as the Dark Side pyramid. Always candid, by turns poignant and funny, Nick's own memories are augmented with extensive research and interviews, making Inside Out a comprehensive history of one of the most brilliant and imaginative bands the world has known and a masterly memoir of rock and roll.

Englishly Witty and Full of Photos and Facts
By Bud Sturguess
The politics, events, dates, and discographies of Pink Floyd have been exhaustingly well-documented over the years, particularly on internet fan sites. But the first official history of the band by one of its members, drummer (and only member to remain in the band and never leave throughout its multi-decade run) Nick Mason, is worth the thirty bucks or so...as long as it's the only Pink Floyd biography you plan to buy in your lifetime.
Mason's structure of Pink Floyd's story is solid, even if his account of the more tense "battle of words" period from the late 70s to mid-80s leaves quite a bit to be desired, lacking a lot of juicy he-said/she-said gossip and tidbits.
Though Mason has scant songwriting credits under his marching-hammer belt buckle, "Inside Out" shows that he was still deeply involved in the creative process, even after self-imposed leader and bassist Roger Waters left the band in the 80s. Mason's wit and humor are distinctly English, sharp and articulate but never laugh-out-loud funny. His amusing but wise fashion of telling the story of one of the most celebrated rock bands on the planet make it a worthwhile read, but what really makes the giant book a good buy is the massive load of photographs, many previously unseen, from both Mason's own private archive and other sources.
The more thorough fans will appreciate the many bits of trivia they can pick up from reading "Inside Out"; as a Floyd freak myself, it took reading this book to discover that one of the considered titles for 1994's "The Division Bell" album was "Pow Wow," or that album designer Storm Thorgerson was nearly shot while trying to take pictures of the Egyptian pyramids for the "Dark Side of the Moon" sleeve. However, some fans may be compelled to skip over Mason's many details about stage and sound equipment.
"Inside Out" gets the story right, and coming from its most neutral member, it is an unbiased, honest and witty account of the history of Pink Floyd. Unless the other two surviving members, Roger Waters and David Gilmour, decide to collaborate on a new Pink Floyd historical document (which will happen when "Dark Side of the Moon" finally stops selling), Nick Mason's unbiased version is the only Floyd file you'll need for a while.

A very good but not quite definative addition. Excellent Pictures.!
By J. R. Cagle
Nick Mason's "Inside Out" is a nice history of the band with excellent pictures and written in a personal yet professional manner which makes it an enjoyable read. Although, I think there are a few better written books out there most notably "Saucearful of Secrets" and "In the Flesh" this book is a very close third and definately worth picking up if you are a Pink Floyd fan. The pictures do make the book the best from a photograph/story point of view and Nick comes accross as very astute even if just a little guarded. It's nice and very thick so its worth the money. Too bad I couldn't get a nice hardcover but the softcover is good enough. Thank-You Nick.

Fascinating, Intriguing Stories for Mystery Lovers
By Science Fiction Reader
I have read many of Alfred Hitchcock's series of horror/mystery books and this is one of the best. Almost all of the stories are worth reading. The most particularly notable ones are: Tomorrow and Tomorrow (Adobe James)(an absolutely horrendous story about revenge), A Good Head for Murder (Charles Runyon), Invisible Cat (Betty Ren Wright), and The Distributor (Richard Matheson). I think that A Good Head for Murder as well as Invisible Cat are absolutely two of the best suspense short stories that I have ever read.

A great book for mystery/horror lovers.

Why

Kiyosaki expands on his belief that the school system was created to churn out 'Es' / Employees... those "A Students" who read well, memorize well and test well... and not the creative thinkers, visionaries and dreamers –entrepreneurs-in-the-making... those "C Students who grow up to be the innovators and creators of new ideas, businesses, applications and products.

The book urges parents not to be obsessed with their kids' "letter grades" ("good grades" might only mean they or the student themselves were successful in jamming a square peg into a round hole...) and focus, instead, on concepts, ideas, and helping their child find their true genius, their special gift. The path they can pursue with a love and true passion.

Robert showcases success stories of "C Students" who grew up to be phenomenal successes – and HIRED those "A Students"(attorneys, accountants, and other school-smart specialists) to work in their businesses... while the more average students, "B Students," often find themselves in government-type jobs...

Not surprisingly, Kiyosaki will coin his own definitions of what "A," "B," and "C" stand for as he gives parents and their children bits of wisdom as well as insights and tools for navigating an ever-changing world... an Information Age world where the ability to change and adapt, understand relationships, and anticipate the future will shape their lives.

I knew there had to be a reason...
By Cory Layne
Leave it to Kiyosaki to simplify the complex and make it understandable. I'm one of the "A" students who never could succeed in any of the several businesses I've started or run, while kids I thought were none too bright in high school and college have been far more successful financially. I've helped a number of them become millionaires in their businesses while I managed their finance and accounting matters and they handled the marketing and sales far better than I ever could. Another winner for Rober Kiyosaki.

Great Insight with Kids Leaving for College
By Edward A. Neering
Love Roberts books and how he relates them to easy understandable language. With having the 1st of 4 kids heading to college I have been immersing myself into the knowledge I need as a parent to help guide them to be successful in whatever that might be. As a parent it is EXTREMLY hard to get your child to think differently about not being an employee. The whole school system is working hard to make sure that they do become employees. My son wants to become a history teacher, and with the current situation and uncertainty about teachers, it really worries me. I then remember in Roberts teachings that your job is your income and investing is your wealth. I have had great success in sharing that thought process with my son. He likes nice things and has a great work ethic so thanks to ALL of Roberts great teachings I see a great future for him.

I am so glad that you wrote this book so my wife can be on board with me as shes reading this now. My wife feels there's security in a job. Shes always been an employee, and thinks thats the right thing to do. It's taken alot of time and effort even through our many successes of owning businesses and rental real estate. She does finally see the rewards from the effort. Also she has had alot of friends whom can't find work even after getting college degrees. Alot of her co-workers have $10's of thousands of college debt making only $12-14 an hour, because thats all they can get. I am so glad that you help guide and educate us that there is another way. Financial education is so important for the world right now with everything thats going on. Please keep the books coming as I am one of your biggest fans...

By far, Robert Kiyosaki's worst book
By Gabriel Torres
The short version:

Worst Robert Kiyosaki book to date; from 400 pages, there are probably 10 pages with new material. He quotes a lot of books, and you will be better off reading the original books. Really badly edited and badly written (his books got worst in this aspect after his legal battle with Sharon Lechter and now that they are self-published); for a guy who brags that he is a millionaire, it would cost him only a few thousand dollars to hire a copy editor and get a better written book (Sharon, we miss you!). What is new on this book is that Kiyosaki spends a great deal of time expressing his personal views on politics, which is completely unnecessary and makes no sense to international readers and will probably alienate all readers that are not over-50-years-old Republicans and/or don't watch Fox News. The author continues to write stories that are not true and publishes a lot of factual errors. The title is excellent, but the delivery doesn't work. If you like the title, you should read Kiyosaki's first book, "If You Want to Be Rich & Happy Don't Go to School," which is far better written and deeper (co-written by Hal Zina Bennett, PhD, which makes a huge difference). Curiously enough, Kiyosaki doesn't like to promote his first book, and very few people are aware of this excellent work.

The long version:

First off, I'd like to say that I am a big Robert Kiyosaki fan since 2001, a time that I was struggling financially. I've read all his books and played his Cashflow game a lot, and was able to achieve my financial freedom in 2007. Therefore, I have a huge debt of gratitude to Mr. Kiyosaki, and I have nothing personal against him.

Also, many may think that I am writing a negative review because I can't write books myself. However, being a best-selling author in my country, with 23 books published about Information Technology, this is definitely not the case.

That said, I was hugely disappointed by this book, and I consider this to be his worst book to date. It seems that Mr. Kiyosaki's new plan to write books is to read half dozen books and explain the same concepts using the ideas he'd already published on his previous books. From a book with over 400 pages, probably only 10 pages consist of new material. There is good advice on the new material (e.g., on page 197, "Do your part to fight the entitlement mentality: Don't give your kids money" and "Many sports programs teach kids that everyone gets a trophy, even if they lose. What is that teaching a child? That everyone is entitled to be a winner?," but the reader who had already read previous Kiyosaki's previous books probably won't have the patience to read this book and find the pearls of windows within. Everything else is comprised of recycled old contents and advertising for his other books and games.

There is nothing bad about using ideas created by other people, as long as you explain them with your own words, add your own flavor to them, and add a bibliography to the book. However, he simply quotes passages from several books without adding anything new, therefore you are better off reading the original works for a more in-depth understanding. Also, except for the first editions of "Rich Dad, Poor Dad," Kiyosaki doesn't add a bibliography to his books, which is a mortal sin in the publishing industry. I've listed below all the books Robert Kiyosaki read to write "Why A Students Work for C Students," as far as I can tell (i.e., this is the bibliography that is missing from the book):

ARNOLD, Karen. Lives of Promise: What Becomes of High School Valedictorians. Jossey-Bass, 1995.

BOETCKER. William J. H. The Ten Cannots. 1916.

BOGLE, John. The Battle for the Soul of Capitalism. Yale University Press, 2005.

GARDNER, Howard. Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Basic Books, 1983.

GRIFFIN, G. Edward. The Creature of Jekyll Island. Amer Media, 1994.

ISAACSON, Walter. Steve Jobs. Simon & Schuster, 2011.

LUNTZ, Frank. What Americans Really Want...Really: The Truth About Our Hopes, Dreams, and Fears. Hyperion, 2009.

MASLOW, Abraham Harold. Motivation and Personality. Harper, 1954.

PAUL, Ron. End the Fed. Grand Central Publishing, 2009.

STANLEY, Thomas. The Millionaire Mind. McMeel, 2001.

The book is badly edited and badly written, and sometimes I thought I was reading a self-published brochure. Actually, this book IS self-published! Further research about the publishing house (Plata Publishing LLC) and I found out that, even though their offices are in Scottsdale, Arizona (same city where Robert Kiyosaki lives), it is a Nevada LLC, whose main owner is the Rich Dad Operating Company LLC, which in turn is owned by Robert and Kim Kiyosaki (these are public records that are all there at the Nevada's Secretary of State website)... The registered agent for the companies is Corporate Direct, which belongs to Kiyosaki's lawyer (and author) Garret Sutton. In summary, currently Robert Kiyosaki books ARE self-published... The author brags that he is a millionaire, yet he didn't have a few thousand dollars to hire an editor to revise and improve his book?

What is new is in this book is that Mr. Kiyosaki decided to write his personal views on politics, basically defending Mitt Romney and trashing Barack Obama. This was completely unnecessary. Since I am not an American citizen, I am neither Democrat or Republican, and really don't care about American politics, as it is my opinion that politics in the United States are completely corrupted by the money of big corporations, so it doesn't matter if the president is a Republican or a Democrat; government policies are currently dictated by special interest groups, and the system is visibly broken. (Kiyosaki should have talked about this instead, in my humble opinion.) These passages about politics will alienate readers who are not over-50-year-old Republicans, who don't watch Fox News, and those who are from other countries (such as myself), as most of us don't follow and/or are not interested in U.S. politics. Curiously, in this book Mr. Kiyosaki brags that his books are published in over 100 countries and over 50 languages (and, therefore, most of his readers are located outside the United States), yet he doesn't have the sensibility of staying away of commentaries specific to the United States that are not of interest outside the country and very difficult to translate to other cultures. (And even inside the country, such discussion in a book about education is questionable.) I guess that, unfortunately, Mr. Kiyosaki is turning himself into an "ugly American."

As many of Mr. Kiyosaki's readers already know, the most painful issue with the author's writing style is the ad nauseam repetition of specific expressions, sentences or words. In "Why A Students Work for C Students" the chosen word was "Steve Jobs." He repeated the name of Apple's co-founder an astonishing 33 times throughout the book (yep, I counted: p. 7, p. 8, p. 39, p. 40, p. 59, p. 61, p. 65, p. 66, p. 70 2x, p. 89, p. 102, p. 109, p. 152, p. 167, p. 168, p. 169, p. 170, p. 187 2x, p. 250, p. 266, p. 295, p. 331, p. 351, p. 383 2x, and p. 391 6x). And the worst thing, he writes as if Jobs was the only founder of the company, completely discounting that the technical genius behind Apple was the other co-founder, Steve Wozniak, and that they could only raise money because of the third co-founder, venture capitalist Mike Markkula. As much Steve Jobs is considered a "genius" in some circles (a view I don't particularly agree after reading Steve Job's biography by Walter Isaacson), Apple wouldn't exist as it is today without Wozniak and Markkula.

And, as it happens on most of his books, Robert Kiyosaki insists in publishing stories that are simply not true, as you will see below in my complete list of factual errors published in "Why A Students Work for C Students."

In summary, the title of the book is great, the actual delivery is awful. Curiously, Kiyosaki has published an excellent book on this subject, "If You Want to Be Rich & Happy Don't Go to School," which is far better written and deeper (co-written by Hal Zina Bennett, PhD, which makes a huge difference). Curiously enough, Kiyosaki doesn't like to promote his first book, and very few people are aware of this excellent work.

Below you will find my specific comments for "Why A Students Work for C Students," by Robert T. Kiyosaki:

p. 25: "(...) get my Masters Degree (...)" The correct spelling is "Master's degree."

p. 38-39: The author publishes a list of successful people who didn't graduate from college. There are three problems with this list. First, several people listed are from a time that colleges didn't even exist and/or were not relevant to their professions (e.g., Christopher Columbus). Second, in the list there are several people who went to college but didn't graduate, as they dropped out of college to run their businesses. The presence of their names in the list is questionable, since without the connections they made during their college years they wouldn't be able to start their business and/or careers and become successful (e.g., Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Mark Zuckerberg, and Karl Rove). And, third, there are several people who graduated from college yet were added to the list:

In number 7 he lists John Glenn. Mr. Glenn graduated with a B. Sc. in Engineering from Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio (source: NASA's website).

In number 10 he lists Winston Churchill. Sir Churchill graduated from the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, in 1894.

In number 33 he lists Carly Fiorina "CEO of Hewlett Packard." It should say "ex-CEO," since she left the company in 2005, way before the book was published. Ms. Fiorina has a B.A. in Philosophy and Medieval Arts from Stanford University (1976), an MBA in Marketing from the University of Maryland, College Park (1980), and a master's degree in Management from the MIT in 1989. Therefore listing her as not having finished college is simply absurd.

In number 41 he lists J. Paul Getty. Actually, J. Paul Getty graduated in Economics and Political Science at Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1914.

In number 44 he lists Tom Anderson (founder of MySpace), who graduated with a B.A. of Arts in Rhetoric and English from University of California, Berkeley and got a master's degree in Film - Critical Studies at University of California, Los Angeles.

In number 47 he lists Steve Wozniak. It is true that he didn't go to college before founding Apple, however he graduated college afterwards (University of California, Berkeley, in 1986).

p. 43: "I accepted the appointment to Kings Point and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree." This is the first time Kiyosaki adds this "with a Bachelor of Science degree." What does that mean? I believe that without saying the specifics of the diploma, mentioning that you have a B. Sc. is meaningless.

p. 79: "Later in life a child may learn another language, but the accent developed early in life often transfers to the new language." This is simply not true. When learning a new language, you retain your teacher's accent, not your own accent of your first language. Depending on the age you learn a second language, you will speak with no accent at all.

p. 89: "Steve Jobs loved his game ¬- the game of making people feel smart, hip, and like geniuses..." Quite the contrary. Steve Jobs berated and threated everybody around him really badly. (Source: Jobs, by Walter Isaacson.)

p. 94: "(...) Masters or Bachelors degrees." The correct spelling is "Master's" and "Bachelor's," respectively.

p. 94: "Today, one of my personal role models for business leadership is Donald Trump. Although he is rich and successful, he treats most people, rich or poor, with respect. My experience in working with Donald is that his communication, even when it's tough, is always respectful." I guaranteed that there are several people out there who won't agree with this sentence, starting with the president Barack Obama. Donald Trump "demanded" the president to show his full-form birth certificate and now that he has shown it, he is "demanding" the president to show his college transcripts and passport application, and even offered $5 million to charity if the president released them, as Trump thinks the president was born in Kenya. When a newspaper asked Trump if he would release his own records, he said that the request was "stupid." Is that treating the president of the United States with respect? Take your political views a part for a second, and listen to Trump and Obama talking and you will clearly see which one has a better education.

p. 111: "The Harvard Review Journal published an article (...)." No bibliographical references, such as author, title, issue, year etcetera.

p. 120-121: Robert Kiyosaki compares Franklin Delano Roosevelt to Adolf Hitler. I am not kidding. Kiyosaki thinks that the creation of the Social Security in 1935 is comparable to the Holocaust. I almost threw the book in the trash bin after that, but I kept reading, as I wanted to write this review.

p. 179: "There is a lot of talk about `tort reform,' which means limiting the outrageous sums of money that judges and juries can award a patient. One reason there may never be `tort reform' is because most of the lawmakers in Washington are lawyers. The rest are politicians who receive large campaign contributions from trial lawyers." The rhetoric with the so-called "tort reform" is that it would lower insurance premiums to medical doctors and, the reasoning goes, it would lower the cost of health insurance to the population. However, on the states where "tort reform" was implemented, there was no decline in the insurance premiums paid by doctors and patients. Therefore, it is my view that politicians are right in blocking "tort reform," not because they are lawyers or financed by lawyers, but because it is in the best for the American population - unless it is mandatory for insurance companies to substantially reduce their premiums (which will never happen). For a more in-depth coverage of this subject, watch the excellent documentary "Hot Coffee" (which Mr. Kiyosaki obviously hasn't watched).

p. 181: "President Obama went on the offensive attacking the rich, saying the rich 1% did not pay their `fair share' in taxes. (...) If 1% of the wealthiest Americans pay 37% of all taxes collected, while the half of Americans earning $34,000 a year or less pay only 2.4%, it doesn't seem unreasonable to ask: Who isn't paying their fair share?" That is an easy one: the big corporations. The largest American corporations pay zero tax in the United States (e.g., GE, Boeing, Verizon, Mattel, Bank of America, and Google - feel free to look it up), while having record profits. In fact, some of the biggest companies even get tax refunds in the order of millions of dollars. From the top 30 companies in the U.S., only DuPont paid more than 4% in taxes in the United States in the past four years. Some claim big corporations shouldn't pay taxes as they create jobs. The problem is that these jobs are usually in China, India, and Ireland. This important subject was barely touched by Robert Kiyosaki in this book. For more information, watch the documentary "We're not Broke" and read the book "Treasure Islands," by Nicholas Shaxson.

p. 194: "The reason the United States cannot balance a budget is simply because the cost of our entitlement programs." Is that really true? If big corporations paid their taxes as they were supposed to pay, wouldn't the budget balance? If the government stopped buying ships and airplanes the military doesn't want, wouldn't the budget balance? (Kiyosaki actually talks about this.) As anyone (except the government) knows, you cannot spend more money than you make. The issue is as simple as that.

p. 197: "(...) the Maine Corps (...)" Typo, it should be "Marine."

p. 202: "Very few schools recommend their students read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, who takes the other side of the coin, vilifying the socialists and honoring the capitalists." My best guess is that Robert Kiyosaki never read this book, and only cited it because Paul Ryan, vice-presidential candidate with Mitt Romney, mentioned on an interview that this was his favorite and most influential book. (I personally don't take Robert Kiyosaki as the reading type; otherwise he would have better writing skills). Otherwise, Robert Kiyosaki would also mention that this book also talks about egoism, the money above everything else, no matter the consequences, and the big discussion on ethics promoted by this book. Furthermore, I wonder which K-12 school would recommend its students to read a 1,200-page novel.

p. 239: "In 2012, a battle broke out in the state of Wisconsin. The fight was an election to unseat (recall) their newly elected governor. Many workers were angry with Governor Scott Walker for cutting their pay and retirement benefits, benefits the state could no longer afford to pay." Huh? The reason was not that. The workers were protesting mainly because the governor wanted to strip their right for collective bargaining. Here is a quote from CBS News website: "The recall fight, prompted by Walker's decision to strip Wisconsin public workers of their collective bargaining rights, has doubled as a proxy fight over whether Republicans can push through spending cuts and confront organized labor - and live to tell about it." For more, watch the documentary "Citizen Koch." Mr. Kiyosaki should get his facts straight.

p. 258: "Globalization also means the U.S. government has already surrender massive amounts of political and economic power to global organizations such as the United Nations, the WTO (World Trade Organization), the IMF (International Monetary Fund) and the World Bank." The United States simply ignore anything that is set by these institutions - e.g., the invasion of Iraq, against the United Nations. The WTO and the IMF are simply puppets of American interests. And the World Bank, despite its name, is in fact controlled by the United States: since the formation of this institution, all presidents have been American citizens, and the U.S. has veto power in this institution. All these institutions are located in the United States and, therefore, there is nothing of "global" about them.

p. 277: "He just did not pay it to you, and then he let's (sic) you think he is giving you extra money." Kiyosaki has just murdered grammar on this one.

p. 281: "If private citizens did not do what the government needs done, we would have communism." What? It is quite the contrary. Apparently Kiyosaki doesn't know the difference between anarchy and communism. What he describes is anarchy, where citizens do whatever they want to do. In communism, the government controls the citizens, and people cannot do what they want to do. See North Korea and the former Soviet Union.

p. 307: "Q: Who does God love more? A: The rich? The middle class? Or the poor?" It seems that Kiyosaki doesn't know the difference between question and answer.

p. 331: "The word education comes from the word educe." Nope. The word education comes from the Latin word "educatio."

p. 344: "(...) the Maine Corps (...)" Typo, it should be "Marine."

p. 351: "This is what Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg did when Apple and Facebook went public. (...) They became billionaires." This is simply not true. On Apple's IPO in 1980, Steve Jobs had 7.5 million shares, and since each share traded for $22, his shares were worth $165 million. Although his net worth peaked at $10 billion during his lifetime, this was accomplished over the years and not at the day of Apple's IPO, as the text claims.

p. 361: "It isn't surprising that, in recent months, the words socialism and communism are heard more and more often in mainstream media." Only if you consider Fox News "mainstream media."

p. 368: "In fact, the word capital is derived from the word cattle." No, it is not. "Capital" comes from the Latin word "capitalis," which means "of the head." Once again, Kiyosaki should research more before writing.

p. 399: "As soon as I started writing this book I knew it would be the most important book I've ever written." Mr. Kiyosaki, you definitely have an ego issue. This is, by a long margin, your worst work.

It seems that I did a far better job in researching for this book than Mr. Kiyosaki himself. This is the last book from this author I will ever read, even though I am a big fan. Enough is enough.

Joe Zirilli knows how to make money....
By Reza Mostafid
....simply by writing a little monoghraph and selling it for 160 bucks....I am not an academic snub, but rather a hardworking engineer that works for a financial firm helping to harness neural networks and traditional forecasting methods for the preditction of stock markets in the middle east.

I give Mr. Zirilli's book 2 stars, because he does share some insights about how to go on about predicting trends and future stock market prices.

HOWEVER having said that, I ordered the book as an electronic copy ( NO I am not mistaken..same ISBN same no of pages etc ) for only 33 bucks and as I said it served me as a little monograph to get my feet wet. For 33bucks that's what I expect and that's what I got, therefore the 33 bucks is a fair price.

Did the book show me how to build and train a net that makes money? Not really, as it is too basic. I read around in supplementary literature on technical trading, econometrics, statistics and last but not least chaos theory to finally get to the point of being able to coax a 14 to 20 day forecast out of net that is useful.

Those complaining about theory, academic snubs, sigma notation and the like...you are trying to use science and mathematics to produce a non-trivial result. To use another reviewer's remarks about another title, if you want to learn to compose / arrange great music you should not complain that the text you are consulting contain notes flat and sharp signs and other symbolism. If you are trying to learn to fly an aircraft you should not complain about having to learn about aerodynamics, navigation and meteorology. Why should it be any different with neural nets?

Get a good book. There are some around that only require a pre-requisite of college calculus and statistics and they really do provide an excellent intro into neural nets. You may want to try the following titles ( preferably in the order they are presented ):

1.) Neural Network Design ( Hagan, Beale, DeMuth)

2.) Neural Smithing ( Reeds and Marks )

3.) Neural Networks for Pattern Recognition ( Cristopher Bishop )

These titles are all available from Amazon.

You can read 1.) rather selectively ( it is well organized ) so is 2.). 3.) should be read front to back if time permits but it is rather self contained. By the way all three books combined will probably set you back a similar amount of money than Joe Zirrili's 135 pages.

Timothy Masters has a few titles on Neural Nets and Time Series prediction. Also for hands on experience try the neural network toolbox in Matlab.

Also check

[...]

for further information and book tips.

Don't let some pompous snob with a Rolex talk you into spending 160 bucks in the hope that you will be able to harness neural network technology to predict stock prices. Developing neural nets tha tcan predict stocks is not easy.

If the above looks like too much effort, well then try writing a book with a similar title then pitch it for ...oh....shall we say ....50 to 100 bucks and try and sell it on the internet.

See how many fish will bite.

Maybe that will make you richer than predicting stocks with neural networks.

Good Starting Point for Financial Types
By A Customer
Contrary to the academic snobs this book presents a basic overview with enough general content to get you going in this area. If you are looking for a seminal book on the subject full of derivatives and summation signs compounded with footnotes to obscure books whose seminal ideas are now dated, then look elsewhere. In the retrospect the book is now 3 years old. Given that technology and markets have changed the book still remains current. For you techies still having to buy this book maybe you never applied what the author also taught in the book. Maybe a little realization that this book is also geared to make you money should have any potential buyer realize that the stock market is made up of all kinds of folks who even with no education become millionaires. Such is the difference between Europe and America. Great starting point book to move on to next level with.

The Life and Death of Lenin, by Robert Payne

Who was Vladimir Ilyich Lenin?

He was a man with vast potential for good and evil.

He was one of the twentieth century’s political geniuses.

He was the revolutionary leader who envisioned backward, feudal Russia as the world’s first socialist country.

He bent Karl Marx’s theories into a weapon for conquering state power, and built the Bolshevik Party into an efficient political machine capable of leading the workers and seizing power.

He held the Russian Revolution together through a bloody civil war, and yet he lived to see the betrayal of his ideals by the rise of Stalin.

As much as any leader, his ideas and personality shaped the 20th century.

‘Mr Payne’s book on Lenin is an impressive work and as interesting as it is impressive’ - Bertrand Russell

‘Splendid character study of a human dynamo’ - The Scotsman

‘a powerful delineation of the man and revolutionary leader … Mr. Payne highlight with a sure touch the main line of Lenin’s drive to power, selecting the significant details of speech, gesture and daily life that bring the man and his intimates to life. The Life and Death of Lenin will clarify both the political and human realities of the Soviet revolution and of communism’ - Philip E. Mosely, Saturday Review

‘to this large-scale study [Mr. Payne] has given his full measure of devotion … [with his] ability to pace a vast, detailed narrative; political sense; an unforced feeling for drama; a firm conception of the central character; and control over an English style that always both fluent and sharply edged … Not only do we watch the unlocking of the vaults of [Lenin’s] character, but we are also enabled to follow the development of the single revolutionary idea that dominated him.’ - Clifton Fadiman, Book-of-the-Month-Club News

‘All the talents of Edgar Allan Poe, Alfred Hitchcock and Charles Addams couldn’t produce a more chilling tale’ - Associated Press

Robert Payne (1911-1983) had over a hundred books published on a wide range of subjects during his lifetime. Critics raved about ‘his vast erudition,’ ‘his magic power over words,’ and that rare ability ‘to capture the spiritual essence of his subject.’ The Russian series, in particular ‘The Life and Death of Lenin’ and ‘The Rise and Fall of Stalin’, raised his reputation as biographer to enormous stature.

Endeavour Press is the UK’s leading independent publisher of digital books.

From atheist to icon
By Edward
He was born Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov and Lenin was only one of his many noms de guerre, but Lenin is the one that stuck, the name of the mummy idolized in Red Square. Robert Payne's "The Life and Death of Lenin", published in 1964, is a highly readable biography of the man who, having absorbed Marx, molded the philosophy to his own means. The government of the proletariat envisaged by Marx (I don't think he had mass executions in mind) became the dictatorship of Lenin, and his dictatorial nature became evident very early in his career. The book contains two striking photographs taken ten years apart. The portrait taken in 1887 depicts a clean-shaven clear-eyed schoolboy with a full head of hair. The group photo taken in 1897 shows a bald, bearded man facing the camera with a steely gaze. A mixture, I suspect, of nature taking its course and a case of concentrated re-invention. Lenin was still a youth when his beloved older brother was executed as a terrorist and when his father died (evidently of a stroke) in the teenager's presence. (Lenin said later: "I was sixteen when I gave up religion.") It was after these two events that Lenin became increasingly revolutionary, a stand confirmed by his reading of "Das Kapital" in 1888. Payne follows his revolutionary activities, his arrest, his exile to Siberia. The long period of Lenin's traveling outside Russia, consolidating his Communist leadership mainly through his writings, is made consistently engrossing. Even more fascinating is Lenin's struggle after the Revolution with Kerensky, who was determined not to become "the Marat of the Russian Revolution" (according to Payne, the slaughter of Nicholas II and his family was directly ordered by Lenin) and the obssession Lenin had of witnessing the proletariat domination of Europe. (He was particularly concerned about England, perhaps because Marx lived there so many years and is buried in London.) The irony of the final chapters is Lenin's relationship with Stalin. Payne writes: "Stalin was a monster. Yet it is important to observe that there could have been no Stalin without Lenin. Stalin was Lenin's child; and Lenin, who hated and despised and feared him, must bear sole responsibility for bringing Stalin to power." Lenin suffered several strokes in his early fifties and officially it was a stroke that killed him; but Payne states categorically that Stalin had him poisoned, citing the discrepencies in the stories of Lenin's last hours. After Lenin's death the mythology began immediately. I think Vladimir Ilyich, a hard-nosed unethereal type, would have been appalled at what happened to himself after his death, his body mummified, his spirit deified. Robert Payne's book neither mummifies nor deifies the man. Terrible and undeniably dynamic, here is the presence that altered the 20th Century and the world.

An Oldie But Goodie
By Amazon Customer
Payne's biography of Lenin goes along way toward humanizing the architect of the 1918 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia. However, having been written during the Cold War years, his scholarship is somewhat limited to sources then available and takes a decidedly pro forma anti-Communist tone. Which I suppose was necessary to be published by a respectable mainstream publishing company in those days (1964).

Payne spends too much time with Lenin's early life, way more than I cared for anyway, but I would gather that this was done for the sake of completeness. Some interesting facts Payne's book revealed to me: Lenin's brother was hung by the authorities for being part of a anti-Czarist underground group (1905); Lenin was briefly held captive by bandits while driving around in the countryside during the 1920's; that he kept a Irish-French mistress for a time; and that the purges, show trials, executions, and deportations that followed the successful campaign over the counter-revolutionary White Armies and their European Allies was Lenin's idea, and not Stalin's. (Although Stalin carried out the program after gaining power and on a scale well beyond what Lenin had in mind.)

Payne's style of writing is easy to follow and replete with interesting personal information about Lenin, such as anecdotes about the items he kept on his desk at the Kremlin and their personal significance to him as well as the portraits on his walls. It all reminded me of how People Magazine might do a cover story about Lenin if they existed in those days.

A weakness in Payne's work is his failure to use footnotes to document the sources for these personal glimpses of Lenin. Official acts and formal documents that Lenin worked on were of course pretty easily available to historians and scholars, even in 1964, and so those aspects of Lenin's official duties in the government and CP are in less need of thorough documentation than are the personal things about him. But it would be nice to know where these personal glimpses of Lenin came from and how credible they are.

I would recommend this book while noting that there are newer biographies of Lenin that are far easier to obtain. I bought my copy at a garage sale for two dollars and, for me at least, it was well worth the price.

One of History's More Colorful Characters
By Solipso
The Goodness: I got a good look at the life and person of one of history's most charismatic individuals. It was entertaining to learn how Lenin's charisma moved him up through the ranks of the revolutionaries. I was pleased at the peeks that Payne gave me of Lenin's private moments. Also, Payne delivered many interesting anecdotes. Especially good were moments of Lenin's childhood, his exile in Siberia, his secret train ride through World War I Germany and his return to Russia, and the near-miss assassination attempt by the female revolutionary Fanya Kaplan.

The Blasé: I guess Payne felt obliged as a professional biographer to make comments on various persons and events, especially about his main subject. Maybe he didn't believe his comments, but he just felt he had to say something. Certainly I didn't believe in everything he said. These comments were the dullest sections of the book.

The Badness: "The Life and Death of Lenin" was published almost half a century ago, and parts of it are outdated. Though I recommend it as a good read, I can't recommend that you read it without reading something more contemporary; for example Robert Service's biography, "Lenin." Otherwise you may get your facts wrong. What follows is my summary of three events that Payne inaccurately describes:

1. The assassination of German ambassador Mirbach: Payne says that Lenin ordered it. But Orlando Figes, in "A People's Tragedy" (published in 1996), gives a convincing account placing sole responsibility on the Left Socialist Revolutionaries. The Bolsheviks, including Lenin, had nothing to do with it.

2. The slaughter of Nicholas Romanov and his family: Payne does say that Lenin ordered the killings, but he gives some convoluted explanation for it. From "A People's Tragedy," I think the order was given for one simple reason: The White Army had surrounded Yekaterinburg, where the Romanovs were imprisoned. If the Whites were to perform a rescue, they would use the Romanovs as a rally flag, which might allow them to win the civil war and defeat Lenin's Red Army. Bye-bye revolution. The safest thing for Lenin to do was just to kill them.

3. Lenin's Death: I think Payne is stretching the facts when he says, "...if there is no evidence to permit us to point directly to the murderer, there is such an abundance of clues that it is no longer possible to believe he died a natural death.... Lenin's death...was brought about by Stalin." Orlando Figes's account of Lenin's death is much more sober. He says nothing about Stalin, or anyone else, murdering Lenin. I go along with the prima facie evidence of Lenin's autopsy: He died of a stroke.
