An Elegant Discourse on Systems Thinking

This is an excellent book. The authors have clearly spent a good deal of effort in the analysis of that cognitive process known as “systems thinking” with the result that they can explain it in simple and concrete terms. Central to their explanation is the concept that systems thinking is based on four ‘rules’ that guide all valid systems thinking: Distinctions; Systems; Relationships; and Perspective (DSRP). Using these four as a base the authors then examine such concepts as mental models and Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) and in doing so provide well crafted definitions of such concepts supported by concrete examples. Now the sub-title of this book refers to “wicked problems” the meaning of which is clearly explained. The authors provide an elegant and clear definition of systems as a “complex networks of interacting variables.” “Wicked Problems” are then defined as the result of a “mismatch” between how real world systems actually work and how we think they work. “Systems thinking attempts to resolve this mismatch.” Again there are concrete examples of how this resolution can be carried out. This book not only explains the cognitive process called “systems thinking”, it shows its practical applications. A book well worth reading

Excellent book on understanding and applying systems thinking

As an educator and community organizer, I’ve long been drawn to systems thinking as a key skill to help bring about a sustainable society. Systems Thinking Made Simple effectively provides the structure and approach to understand and apply systems thinking that we all need. The framework that the Cabreras provide in this book is simple, applicable and relevant in professional and every day settings. And, the book is visually appealing, easy to read, and includes diverse examples that demonstrate the concepts. I highly recommend this book for educators, those engaged in wicked problems such as water, food systems, energy, social justice, and climate change, and really anyone who wants to improve their thinking – become one of the 7 billion systems thinkers that we need and this book aspires to develop.

A pleasure

The book is surprisingly simple in its message and is read with ease.
For a reserved British reader the style may be too "in your face" with moments of "cheese", but I would encourage you to persevere as the contents are thought provoking and novel - there's a paradigm for systems thinking in this book. This novelty is a real achievement in the Systems literature genre given that most of the subject has already been said many times before.
