Review
"This is best introductory textbook of epidemiology that I have encountered. It is also ranked the highest by my students. The major change from the fourth to fifth edition is the addition of more color to the tables and figures. The overall content has not changed much. Thus, for students who prefer a more colorful presentation, this edition is a worthwhile investment. If this is not the case and students have the previous edition, they can still learn the principles and methods of epidemiology from the prior edition."-Charles Lynch, MD,PhD, MS(University of Iowa College of Public Health) Doody Review: 4 stars

"The book is extremely well organized with clear sections. It benefits from a high level of illustration, including a variety of pictures, diagrams and even cartoons, some of which are in colour―which are an appealing and welcome break from the textual presentation of epidemiological theory. Overall, I think it is an excellent book for medical students and occupational medicine trainees and a useful revision and reference text for consultant occupational physicians―one of the most clearly laid out and readable general epidemiology texts that I have ever seen."  Reviewed by: Julia Smedley, Occupational Medicine   Date: July 2015

This is a really great textbook. This is a subject that could easily be very dry, but the author writes in a clear, engaging, non-patronizing manner that made it actually pleasurable to read. The author included humor and a great multitude of real-life examples to bring home the point- to help you, a non-epidemiologist, understand well. I'm a graduate nursing student with undergraduate degrees in both biology and nursing, and never felt the need to write a textbook review before. Teachers and professors, please consider this textbook for your classes!

It is a textbook, after all.
By Tammy
To claim to love a textbook would be crazy in some way, but this textbook breaks the subject matter down in an understandable way and has done much to help me understand what my instructors are hoping for me to learn. Is there really much more that one can ask for in a textbook?

Great, Small Table Font
By K. Hicks
I am currently reading the book for an epi grad class. It has MANY examples that help illustrate points, which I need. Also, the questions at the end of the text help solidify the points, which I also need. What's disappointing is that I bought the e-book version and the tables and charts are often too small (font and all) for me to read. If this had been an actual book, I am sure it would have been printed in a reading-sized font. The one via Kindle is toooooo small and, thus, I miss much needed insight since lots of questions and examples refer to these tables and figures :(

Kindle needs to review it's e-printing of this text, including offer ways of enlarging it. (I cannot enlarge it even via my computer's functions).

The Trump Card: Playing to Win in Work and Life, by Ivanka Trump

From the daughter of business mogul Donald Trump and a rising star in the Trump organization, this New York Times bestseller is a business book for young women on how to achieve success in any field, based upon what Ivanka Trump has learned from her father and from her own experiences.

Inspiration. Success. Confidence. Passion. No one is born with these qualities, but they are the key ingredients for reaching goals, building careers, or taking a blueprint and turning it into a breathtaking skyscraper. In The Trump Card, Ivanka Trump recounts the compelling story of her upbringing as the ultimate Apprentice, the daughter of Donald and Ivana Trump, and shares the life lessons and hard-won insights that have made her a rising star in the business world.

Whether it’s landing that first job, navigating the workplace, or making a lasting impact, Ivanka’s valuable, practical advice for young women shows how to:

• Use uncertainty to your advantage—thrive in any environment
• Step up and get noticed at work—focus and efficiency will open doors
• Create a strong and consistent identity—your name and reputation are your best assets
• Know what you want—get the most out of any negotiation.

Ivanka also taps into the wisdom of today’s leaders, including Arianna Huffington, Russell Simmons, and Cathie Black, with “Bulletins” from her BlackBerry. “We’ve all been dealt a winning hand,” she writes, “and it is up to each of us to play it right and smart.”

From Publishers Weekly
A child of privilege with one of the most familiar surnames in America, Trump has managed to avoid many of the pitfalls that routinely plague children of the rich and famous (reckless partying, drug abuse and other mindless self-indulgences) to become a focused, successful woman in her own right-a model, entrepreneur and vice president of the Trump Organization. Eager to share what she's learned at some of the best schools in the country, as well as from her driven, successful parents, Trump is straightforward and fully self-aware, realizing that readers will dismiss her achievements as simple nepotism; as such, she owns her privilege, acknowledges her advantages and then sets about disabusing readers of their presumptions with intelligent, well-conceived, positive advice; unbridled ambition; and a strong measure of graciousness and humility. Throughout this self-help memoir, Trump has sprinkled succinct, practical quotes from famous associates like Arianna Huffington and Tory Burch, bringing further weight to this young career woman's accomplished work.

Ok, I'll admit I was intrigued. That intrigue turned to disappointment, which lead to disgust.
By shell
BLUF*: I'm not saying that she hasn't had to work hard, or that her life has been easy or without high expectations but to say that all of her life experiences up to the age of 25 (as read in this book) are what put her as the youngest director on the board of a publicly-traded company is ridiculous. Worse, I feel this book was used to capitalize on her fans from The Apprentice.

Ivanka spent the prologue writing her opinion about herself writing this book. She talked about not judging her for the "silver spoon that might or might not have been lodged in my mouth at birth" and then talks with an air of spoil throughout the book: "The dorms at Choate were the first building I lived in that didn't say Trump..." and "If Chapin and Choate had been airline seats, they would have been first class seats all the way." The private planes to Palm Beach, her childhood bedroom on the 67th floor of a Trump building overlooking Central Park ("I loved waking up every morning and looking out on Central Park and at all the incredible buildings along its edges."), Michael Jackson showing up to her ballet recital. Oh, but her parents made her and her siblings sit in coach when they traveled, well, except for when she traveled with her mother that is. Wait....why is all this autobiographical information in a business book?

I get you want to cover the influences in your life but according to this she has none other than her parents (Is she closed-minded? Thinks so highly of her family? She even follows the exact same format of her father's books: opening with a quote, followed by a long personal story that is supposed to show some great business skill or trait). And she spends chapters dedicated to writing about them, their lives and how wonderful they are as parents (again why is how they met in a club in NYC in a business book? Or writing about HIS successes in HIS career in HER business book?). She mentions her father (274 times)/ Donald (30 times), mother (84 times). And talks about her private schools Choate (8 times), Chapin (4 times), Wharton (17 times). Ok, endlessly rubbing in your private school education ("One area where my parents were happy to spend lavishly on their children was education...", "...a first-tier education would fortify our foundations as individuals. Not that we couldn't get a perfectly fine education in a public school setting.") is fine if you could at least mention one relevant example from your education there, one inspiring story, a team building exercise, anything, otherwise it is a name drop (Example: she learned to be on time in life not from being penalized by a professor but, because her father had the private plane to Florida take off without her step-mother since she was 5 minutes late). She also doesn't mention any failures or any times where she has actually failed at something (straight A student while in private school while modeling and again at Wharton, never failing an assignment. Does that show weakness to a Trump?).**

The only time I feel she actually gives tips is when she writes about her luxury jewelry line and how she came up with the novel idea of women buying jewelry for themselves and marketing it and like all things Trump, naming it after herself. (Wait, 4-6 figure prices for jewelry with her name on it but having shoes that I regular see in DSW? That shoves her bit on Brand Identity out the window.)

So where does this book leave me- a person with no family wealth or internationally known name, no private school education, no first class travel and stays at five star hotels- to pick up this book, relate to her, and be able to help guide my young self in the business world? It's almost like she has written this book because she became popular from The Apprentice (which I liked her input and involvement on the show- which lead me to want to read this book) and is capitalizing on that to sell this book (very much like her father), case in point, I bought this book.

*Also known as Bottom Line Up Front, which is used in the business world to quickly get to the point and decision making. A tip that actually could help women in the business world- be concise and get to the point.
** Stories of failure and how to overcome are also a very important business lesson because everyone will fail at something at some point, and you need to get back up and recover but, Ivanka apparently hasn't failed at anything (or is that ego?).

Not an Ivanka fan? Don't waste your time.
By C. Garcia
I definitely qualify as an Ivanka fan. I buy her products like nobody's business, follow her on Facebook, gaze at her pictures... yeah... I think that's enough. But let's be honest - she isn't kidding anyone in this book. In the real world (the one that she has been mercifully shielded from her entire life), it is simply not possible for us "normal people" to quickly achieve the level of success she condescendingly and naively claims is available to "everyone." So if that theme is going to bother you, I highly recommend running the other way. However, if you are an Ivanka fan like I am, and find yourself inspired by the fact that she is a dignified, elegant female role model, you will probably enjoy the book. It reads much more like an interesting autobiography into the privileged world of an intelligent young lady, and for a little while will allow you to escape your own life and imagine what it might be like to live in hers. You can even lap up the lie that her kind of life is easily attainable if you just follow her superficial tips - at least for an hour or two. But I can assure you that, just as everyone else here has stated, if you are reading this book purely for the business advice, you will be disappointed and want your money back.

By Natalia
This is a nice book if you have nothing else to do and need to kill some time. You can get to know something about her life but don't seek for any inspiration, motivation or great advice in this book. I even didn't finish it. Stopped somewhere in the middle. Really expected more.

Dornier Do 24 Units (Combat Aircraft), by Peter de Jong

Perhaps the most seaworthy flying boat ever built, the elegant, tri-motor Dornier Do 24 served with both the Allied and Axis forces in very different parts of the globe during World War II, garnering an excellent reputation along the way This study uses archival records, first-hand accounts and revealing photographs to illuminate the combat career of this remarkable aircraft for the first time in English.

The German-built Do 24 was the Netherlands Navy's principal aerial asset during the Japanese invasion of the East Indies. While the survivors of that ordeal served in the Australian Air force, in occupied Holland and France production continued swiftly and the Do 24 equipped the German Air-Sea rescue service, whose crews loved and respected the machine. The type witnessed the rise and fall of the Luftwaffe over all the European seas, took part in the desperate evacuations of Wehrmacht troops on the Baltic in the face of the overwhelming Soviet advance, and was pressed out of service only with the withdrawal of Spanish Do 24s in 1969.

This volume tells the long and eventful story of the faithful Do 24 in full.

Excellent treatment of a rare subject
By Barrett Tillman
At first look, most Osprey readers will wonder "What in the world?" Why would Osprey devote a Combat Aircraft title to a relatively obscure flying boat?

Well, I'm glad that Osprey did. Clearly the publisher knows its market, as both the Combat Aircraft and the Aces Aircraft series were aimed at modelers, and it's surprising how many kits have been produced of the Do. 24. A quick glance at Google Images shows at least half a dozen, testament both to the type's operational record and its aesthetic appeal.

Peter de Jong clearly knows his subject, as he provides detailed descriptions of the 24's design and development as well as its use by Germany, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, and others. In that regard, the Dornier was used by Allied, Axis, and neutral nations during WW II. Though fewer than 300 were produced, final Spanish service apparently lasted until the late 1960s, a tribute to the type's longevity.

Most of the text understandably addresses Luftwaffe service, including little-known covert operations in the Mediterranean and Baltic arenas. But there's an excellent chapter on Dutch use in Europe and the Pacific, with detailed descriptions of successes and losses.

Typical of the publisher's series, this volume has more than 70 good to excellent quality photos plus 30 of color profiles by veteran Osprey illustrator Chris Davey. The unusual schemes shown for French and Spanish aircraft undoubtedly will attract modelers everywhere.

Finally, two appendices provide a handy reference for historians interested in the ten German and eight Netherlands units that flew the graceful trimotor seaplane.

Saving lives...
By HMS Warspite
The Dornier Do 24 flying boat had an enviable record as a search and rescue aircraft during the Second World War, snatching thousands of downed aviators and shipwrecked sailors from various seas and oceans under combat conditions. As author Peter de Jong points out, the Do 24 served both sides and several countries during the conflict.

"Dornier Do 24 Units" is an Osprey Combat Aircraft Series book, recapturing the history of the airframe. The introduction describes their first combat use in 1940 as part of a German airlift of personnel and supplies into Narvik in North Norway, but their first buyer was actually the Dutch Navy, which bought several squadrons worth of aircraft for use in the Netherlands East Indies. The Dutch squadrons would perform courageously against the onslaught of the Japanese invasion in 1941. A handful of the surviving aircraft would reach Australia, for use by that country.

Only after developing a widespread need for search and rescue at sea would Germany decide to use the Do 24. Do 24 squadrons would work the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, the Baltic, the Black Sea, and even the Arctic over the course of the war. The text provides details about the exploits of each operational squadron. The narrative is supported by an impressive selection of period photographs and some excellent illustrations by Chris Davey, including a variety of "type" templates. This book shines a fascinating light on a largely forgotten aspect of the Second World War, including the heroism of the aircrews and the impressive numbers of lives they saved. Highly recommended to aviation buffs and to students of the Second World War.

Kurt Vonnegut: Letters, by Kurt Vonnegut

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY
Newsweek/The Daily Beast • The Huffington Post • Kansas City Star • Time Out New York • Kirkus Reviews

This extraordinary collection of personal correspondence has all the hallmarks of Kurt Vonnegut’s fiction. Written over a sixty-year period, these letters, the vast majority of them never before published, are funny, moving, and full of the same uncanny wisdom that has endeared his work to readers worldwide.

Included in this comprehensive volume: the letter a twenty-two-year-old Vonnegut wrote home immediately upon being freed from a German POW camp, recounting the ghastly firebombing of Dresden that would be the subject of his masterpiece Slaughterhouse-Five; wry dispatches from Vonnegut’s years as a struggling writer slowly finding an audience and then dealing with sudden international fame in middle age; righteously angry letters of protest to local school boards that tried to ban his work; intimate remembrances penned to high school classmates, fellow veterans, friends, and family; and letters of commiseration and encouragement to such contemporaries as Gail Godwin, Günter Grass, and Bernard Malamud.

Vonnegut’s unmediated observations on science, art, and commerce prove to be just as inventive as any found in his novels—from a crackpot scheme for manufacturing “atomic” bow ties to a tongue-in-cheek proposal that publishers be allowed to trade authors like baseball players. (“Knopf, for example, might give John Updike’s contract to Simon and Schuster, and receive Joan Didion’s contract in return.”) Taken together, these letters add considerable depth to our understanding of this one-of-a-kind literary icon, in both his public and private lives. Each letter brims with the mordant humor and openhearted humanism upon which he built his legend. And virtually every page contains a quotable nugget that will make its way into the permanent Vonnegut lexicon.

• On a job he had as a young man: “Hell is running an elevator throughout eternity in a building with only six floors.”
• To a relative who calls him a “great literary figure”: “I am an American fad—of a slightly higher order than the hula hoop.”
• To his daughter Nanny: “Most letters from a parent contain a parent’s own lost dreams disguised as good advice.”
• To Norman Mailer: “I am cuter than you are.”

Sometimes biting and ironical, sometimes achingly sweet, and always alive with the unique point of view that made him the true cultural heir to Mark Twain, these letters comprise the autobiography Kurt Vonnegut never wrote.

From Booklist
Even with the abundance of novels, stories, and essays Vonnegut completed during his lifetime, it will surprise few admirers that he was an equally prolific letter writer. Compiled for the first time, by his close friend and fellow author Wakefield, Vonnegut’s correspondence spans 60 years, from a 1945 letter he wrote to his parents upon being released from a German POW camp to a final declining, at 84, shortly before his death, of an invitation to deliver a lecture at Cornell, his alma mater. In between, bearing all the canny observations and sardonic witticisms that distinguished his most famous works, are dozens of letters to relatives, friends, and sometimes foes, many revealing fascinating insights into Vonnegut’s private thoughts and inspirations. Highlights include reflective letters on his sudden rise to fame, supportive notes to such colleagues as Bernard Malamud and Norman Mailer, and a scathing missive to a school board threatening censorship. Arranged in chronological order and including Wakefield’s insightful background information on Vonnegut’s life, this is a volume fans will treasure. --Carl Hays

“Smart, funny, and very compassionate. Reading this is a must for fans of the author.”—The Christian Science Monitor

He was always at his best when adopting an intimate, down-to-earth tone, and the same animating force that made him a brilliant storyteller is evident again and again in these letters. . . . This is a frank and funny book, offering rich insights into Vonnegut’s character and career.”—The Dallas Morning News

“This miraculous volume of selected letters provides a moving and revelatory portrait of the famed author of Slaughterhouse-Five and Cat’s Cradle. . . . Fans will find the collection as spellbinding as Vonnegut’s best novels, and casual readers will discover letters as splendid in their own way as those of Keats.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“A literary treasure . . . this collection of letters—many of which have never been published—rightly can be viewed as the autobiography Vonnegut never wrote.”—The Oklahoman

“[An] intimate, far-ranging monologue by one of the 20th century’s funniest, sharpest, darkest minds . . .  it’s difficult not to marvel at Vonnegut’s depth, warmth and wit. . . . Together, [the letters] give a comprehensive sketch of his personality. They show who he was and who he became.”—The Kansas City Star

“Letters mirrors some of Vonnegut’s best fiction . . .  wry, witty, and eminently quotable. Perhaps more importantly, his letters reflect a genuineness and humanity that always lived just beneath the surface of Vonnegut’s fiction.”—The Financialist

“Wit, aphorism, charm, wisdom and joshery abound here. . . . Vonnegut’s voice was as unique as his art. It is ominpresent here.”—Buffalo News

“Everything that’s familiar in [Vonnegut's] fiction is in the letters—he’s funny, caustic, sentimental, profound, melancholy, angry, and always himself.”—The Oregonian

“Tirelessly compiling letters and manuscripts from over seven decades of correspondence with his mentors, publishers, and even a school board director who banned his works, Wakefield finally gives the reader a sense of Vonnegut’s life without time travel or aliens to mystify and universalize his emotions. . . . Vonnegut is stripped of any possible self-promotion and his true affection and unselfishness shows. . . . a deep and true portrayal.”—The Daily Californian

“At last: the Vonnegut book readers of the late modern master have been waiting for. . . . It’s his voice again, live as ever, clear and unvarnished, with the pop and crackle of a hardwood fire on an Autumn night. . . . For those of us that miss Kurt Vonnegut, it makes this collection a gift. Pick up this book, it’s like having him by your side.”—NUVO

You'll Love These Letters!
By Lena Rivkin
It's rare that a book's introduction makes me speak out loud while reading. Don't get me wrong. I wasn't reading aloud. I just found myself saying "Wow" and "Huh!" and "I didn't know that!" out loud, to myself, as I read this beautiful book. As an artist, I found the cover photo and art and even the fonts of the chapter headings both stunning and a fond visit back to the Seventies. But as a reader, and a passionate re-reader of writers I love, I was intrigued and fascinated by the introduction- written with passionate restraint by Dan Wakefield.

Honestly? I rarely read more than one page of book introductions, as they usually reveal more about the writer of the Introduction than the person the Introducer is introducing. But this is happily not the case with Dan Wakefield. I love Wakefield's books, especially "Expect A Miracle" and "Spiritually Incorrect." Actually, now that I think about it, I probably only began to read this Introduction because it was written by Dan Wakefield! His clear, concise and empathetic prose informed me deeply about Kurt Vonnegut and his influences, his family and his artistic struggles to have his iconic and iconoclastic voice published and read.

In fact, a unique and welcome addition to this book is the introduction of each era of letters- which smartly and helpfully places us in the context of Vonnegut's life when he wrote the letters and to whom he was writing. It's such a simple technique but begs the question of why this isn't done more with published letters of notable people... and in this book the chapter introductions serve to create more comprehension of Vonnegut's life and how he dealt with family, friends, associates, success and disappointment. Not only did I feel I was learning so much more about Vonnegut, in almost a biographical way, but this book served to make me want to hunt down a biography of Vonnegut-- but only if it's as well written as this one.

The mark of a good book is one that inspires me to read more. Kurt Vonnegut's Letters not only makes me want to read more Vonnegut but it also makes me want to go back and re-read my treasured Dan Wakefield books.

Great winter read. Stay inside, get cozy on a couch under a blanket and disappear into the mind of a great man as commemorated by another great man.

KV Rocks From the Grave
By Ogr8ys1
Perhaps I am wearing rose colored glasses when I read this, with KV being my favorite author, but this book will show you how the man thought throughout the decades in a way that no biographer can ever capture. His letters flourish with wit, humor, insecurity, grandiose notions, and indignation. He outlines his struggles to become a literary giant, while not understanding how he achieved this title.

You actually can picture him at the typewriter and share in the "mood of the moment" of his thoughts, written to a wide variety of people through the 60 years that this testaments span.

As a true fan of his literature, you won't be sorry for this purchase as you revisit books long past, and my guess is that after reading this you will be dusting off Breakfast of Champions and Cat's Cradle to fully understand what you have just enjoyed reading.

Finally you will receive a sense of American history and where the world was, is and is perhaps heading towards. Just loved it and snorted this book up like a cocaine addict.

5 stars.

Vonnegut still a good read
By Rose Norman
Have been a Vonnegut fan since *Slaughterhouse 5* and have read most of his fiction, and some of the non-fiction (*Timequake*). These letters are a cut above most of what he was publishing in those last 20 years, and they explain what was going on that made those later books so disappointing, to me anyway. The letters are especially well edited by a friend from his hometown, Indianapolis. Not a "getting even" book. More a "getting inside" the life of one of the most authentic writers of our time.

Stunning
By Annie Maus
It's embarrassing that I've reached a mature age without ever having read anything by Henry James. I'd always wanted to, but every time I started The Ambassadors or The Portrait of a Lady, I'd give up after a couple chapters. Recently I had a chunk of time and I decided to try again, with The Portrait of a Lady. What an incredible book! To read a 19th Century masterpiece is a very different experience from reading a lot of contemporary literary fiction: you're forced to read deeply. The pace is slow, the unveiling of plot is subtle. You sink into the book and you breathe the air and feel the life of Isabel Archer and Ralph Touchett, Lord Warburton  and Madam Merle, among the many. James writes exquisite sentences: I almost wished I could read with my eyes closed so that I could let his vision overtake me.   It was an unbelievably beautiful experience.

Isabel Archer is truly one of literature's great heroines: I did not want to like her, but she is an irresistible force, and once you've been introduced, you'll never want to forget her or this book.

The Portrait of a Lady
By -_Tim_-
_The Portrait of a Lady_ by Henry James follows idealistic, formidable Isabel Archer as she confronts and eventually accommodates herself to an imperfect world.

The book opens with an extended, and ingenious, characterization of Isabel and some other sympathetic characters. Much of this is accomplished in a kind of _House and Garden_ fashion. We are shown a distinguished English country house on a hill above the Thames:

"A long gabled front of red brick, with the complexion of which time and the weather had played all sorts of pictorial tricks, only, however, to improve and refine it, presented to the lawn its patches of ivy, its clustered chimneys, its windows smothered in creepers. The house had a name and a history . . ."

. . . and so do its noble occupants, a wealthy American expatriate and his son.

When their cousin Isabel arrives, she acquires merit in the reader's eyes by her appreciation of Gardencourt:

"Her uncle's house seemed a picture made real; no refinement of the agreeable was lost upon Isabel; the rich perfection of Gardencourt at once revealed a world and gratified a need. The large, low rooms, with brown ceilings and dusky corners, the deep embrasures and curious casements, the quiet light on dark, polished panels, the deep greenness outside, that seemed always peeping in, the sense of well-ordered privacy in the center of a `property' - a place where sounds were felicitously accidental, where the tread was muffled by the earth itself and in the thick mild air all friction dropped out of contact and all shrillness out of talk - these things were much to the taste of our young lady, whose taste played a considerable part in her emotions."

Later, Lord Warburton, a worthy English lord, acquires standing through Isabel's appreciation of his habitation, Lockleigh:

". . . as they saw it from the gardens, a stout, grey pile, of the softest, deepest, most weather-fretted hue, rising from a broad, still moat, it affected the young visitor as a castle in a legend."

James advances his characterizations through dialogue as well, but not, at least in the first part of the book, through action. His work in the first part of _The Portrait_ is like the work of Osmond, a character introduced later in the book, who executes a minute representation of an antique coin using watercolors: the representation is beautiful, it is "art," but there is no sense of movement or striving.

Isabel eventually inherits a fortune that makes her independent; she is courted by gallant gentlemen, and she encounters some less savory characters. This is a sad book: we don't want to see Isabel brought down to earth. I must say I was dissatisfied with the abrupt ending of the book that fails to resolve Isabel's situation. Even with this imperfection, this is a beautifully written novel.

The Penguin Classics edition of _The Portrait_ is worth the price, with lovely cover art by John Singer Sargent. It includes a useful introduction and plot summary by Geoffrey Moore (like almost all introductions to fiction, it is best appreciated after reading the book itself), a preface and notes by the author, endnotes, a chronology, and a bibliography.

It's a good portrait
By Joseph M. Powers
I read this, my first H. James novel, on the recommendation of a friend while I was commencing a trip to Rome. It was an excellent choice. I must say I was not entirely on board in the early stages of the book, set in England. Marraige proposals were happening too fast for my taste. Nevertheless, I was pleasantly surprised by the witty repartee, which reminded me much of Wilde. The wit diminishes and the intensity increases on the continent, especially in its Roman locale, and it was here that I found myself much more interested. The book has a soul. Its characters are richly painted and became interesting--I enjoyed them all. The novel also has a beautifully symmetric construction. In its early stages I thought James was trying too hard to perfect his European literary colleagues; by the end, the novel stood on its own. So, despite some minor growing pains, I can recommend and will likely read another by HJ. Peter Washington's introduction in the Everyman edition (James' New York version) is an added benefit.

Tony Hancock: The Definitive Biography, by John Fisher

Regarded as the best radio and TV comic of his era, Tony Hancock was a man whose star burned brightly in the eyes and ears of millions before his untimely death in 1968. Now, forty years on, critically acclaimed biographer John Fisher brings the first fully authorised account of his life.

Tony Hancock was one of post-war Britain’s most popular comedians – his radio show ‘Hancock’s Half Hour’ would clear the streets as whole families tuned in to listen.

His peerless timing and subtle changes in intonation marked Hancock out as a comic genius. His character ‘Anthony Aloysius St John Hancock’ was an amplification of his own persona, a pompous prat whose dreams of success are constantly thwarted. The original British loser that we recognise in Victor Meldrew and Alan Partridge. Wonderfully supported by a cast including Sid James, Hattie Jacques and Kenneth Williams, and working with scripts from Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, Hancock became a huge star. The show was commisioned for TV, showcasing his talent for hilarious facial expression, and he became the first British comedian to earn a thousand pounds a week.

Behind Tony Hancock’s success however hid the self-destructive behaviour that plagued him all his life. Prone to self-doubt, and wanting to be the star of his own show, he got rid of James, and finally dismissed Galton and Simpson who had created the platform for his success.

His private life was wracked by his ever increasing alcoholism and bouts of depression, and his relationships shattered by his capacity for violence. His ratings fell and, feeling washed up and alone after divorcing his second wife, he committed suicide in an Australian hotel room in 1968.

Now, forty years after his death John Fisher explores the turbulent life of a man regarded by his peers as one of the greatest British comics to have ever lived.

More than Half an Hour Here
By malcsharp
Remember the show about nothing? The main character was a comedian, there was a couple of "unusual" male friends, one of whom was "on the make" and a female friend. Thinking Seinfeld? Well no. Think Hancock's Half Hour, originally a hugely successful radio series and then an equally successful TV series back in the 1950's.

Galton and Simpson provided the scripts and Tony Hancock delivered them to perfection. This is an excellent biography of the comedian who yearned to be taken seriously. Fortunately some of his most magnificent work is available on CD and DVD and John Fisher does a very good job highlighting the successes as well as dealing with the complexities of a man that wanted to be so much more.

Unlike Hancock's great hero Sid Field we have a lasting memory of the man in this work.

Hancock and the human condition - both funny and sad
By MR PHILIP J SHANNON
Tony Hancock, at his peak in the 1950s, made one third of the British population laugh. He did it, not by telling jokes or delivering the smutty double-entendre, but by finding humour in the clash between the common person's dreams for a better life and the serial disappointment of those dreams. John Fisher's biography of Hancock analyses the man, his artistic persona, and the essence of his comedy that had made Hancock Britain's most-loved comic.

Born in 1924 to a semi-professional music hall family, Hancock got hooked early on the thrill of making people laugh. He served his apprenticeship in provincial variety clubs and radio where his aptitude for the comedy of character brought him to the attention of the BBC and two of the best comedy scriptwriters in the business, Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, who combined to produce his greatest achievement, Hancock's Half Hour, on radio and TV from 1954 to 1961.

Hancock's skill with interpretation, timing, delivery, vocal inflection, body gesture and facial expression captured every nuance of Galton and Simpson's scripts, and, with one of those chemically perfect support casts (Sid James, Hattie Jacques, Bill Kerr and Kenneth Williams), turned their fictional home at 23 Railway Cuttings, East Cheam, into everyone's site for the mugging of aspirations by reality.

East Cheam was a shabby south London suburb, struggling with poverty and rationing after the war, and a rebuttal to the Tory Prime Minister, Harold MacMillan's, catch-cry of `You never had it so good'. Anthony Aloysius St John Hancock (Hancock's radio and screen persona) aspired to the good life but was doomed by his lowly class. The added pomposity and pretensions of his character made for a doubly humorous fall without ever losing his identification with all those who knew through bleak experience that life is not as it should be.

Hancock could make humour literally out of nothing (such as the boring Sunday afternoon), extracting comedy out of the "dreary minutiae of humdrum existence". Hancock, and Galton and Simpson, were admirers of the American humourists, James Thurber and Robert Benchley, who were masters of this brand of humour. Walter Mitty, the fictional subject of a famous Thurber short story, also inspired the daydreams of heroism, excitement and adventure in the fantasies of Hancock, yearning for something better than grimy suburbia or a lonely Earls Court bed-sit.

It is not a cliché to say that Hancock suffered for his art. He sought perfection and was plagued by self-doubt, not helped by a life-long struggle with learning his lines. Every night on TV (or stage) was like a first night and he would usually be physically sick.

This core anxiety soon intensified, as, seeking new directions and international film recognition, Hancock moved on from Galton and Simpson and the BBC. This began, however, a seven year slide in his career, feeding his self-doubt and insecurity as his ratings plummeted, overtaken by, amongst others, Galton and Simpson's new vehicle, Steptoe and Son.

Alcohol was Hancock's recourse but this only served to destroy his technical comedic gifts. In his private life, he became violent towards his women partners, and suffered psychotic episodes and mood swings. Clinical depression, vodka and barbiturates provided the lethal combination for Hancock's suicide in Sydney in June 1968, aged just 44 - "things seem to go too wrong too many times", said his suicide note. It is ironic that Hancock, whose character made life bearable for so many others, was unable to save himself in the end.

The rise and fall of Hancock is exhaustively told by Fisher but he is rather less voluble on one of the main reasons for Hancock's achievements, for Hancock described himself as a socialist (this gets one sentence in a 627 page biography) as Galton and Simpson also called themselves socialists (this is only hinted at by Fisher in describing Galton as a "pen-pusher" at the Transport and General Workers Union).

The socialist politics of Hancock, Galton and Simpson gave them a genuine sympathy for the lives of the Hancock public with their disappointments and antagonism to those who stood in the way of fulfilment. Hancock was also a fervent atheist and strong sceptic of war (he had lost his elder brother in World War 11), and his disillusion with the self-feeding hypocrisies of war and religion helped to make the rationalist and pacifist, Bertrand Russell, his most admired philosopher.

Hancock identified, and personified, the "two basic ingredients of good comedy" - it should be "both funny and sad". Hancock knew that to laugh at the human condition you had first to be able to cry at it if the point, as the socialist Hancock also knew, was to change it.

Like it overall...a bit wordy at times, and it assumes a knowledge of pre-1970 british show business. However, lots of information and substance.

(Jazz Instruction). A one-of-a-kind book encompassing a wide scope of jazz topics, for beginners and pros of any instrument. A three-pronged approach was envisioned with the creation of this comprehensive resource: as an encyclopedia for ready reference, as a thorough methodology for the student, and as a workbook for the classroom, complete with ample exercises and conceptual discussion. Includes the basics of intervals, jazz harmony, scales and modes, ii-V-I cadences. For harmony, it covers: harmonic analysis, piano voicings and voice leading; modulations and modal interchange, and reharmonization. For performance, it takes players through: jazz piano comping, jazz tune forms, arranging techniques, improvisation, traditional jazz fundamentals, practice techniques, and much more! Customer reviews on amazon.com for Jazzology average a glowing 5 stars! Here is a typical reader comment: "The book's approach is so intuitive, it almost leads you by the hand into the world of jazz. Certainly jazz is freedom of expression, but you have to know what you're doing and this book is the tool for that ... (it) should be standard in every high school with a jazz program and every college lab band."

One of the best Jazz theory books I've ever read.
By Pot3ntial
This book is phenomenal. I'm a professional musician and composer with a classical background and I love getting theory books to get new ideas and understand non-classical methods of thinking. I can honestly say that this book is one of the best I've ever found. Because it was written by both a jazz musician and classical musician, ideas are explained in ways that are very easy for me to relate to, but the book also reveals jazz concepts I was unfamiliar with. I have learned a ton from this book and it is a permanent and welcome addition to my library.

It is well written, easy to understand, flows well, and is organized very clearly. I have to say, I wish I had gotten this instead of getting Levine's book years ago. I'm still glad I have Levine's book, but I find this to be a great counterweight to it.

My only issue is that there are several typos I discovered within the first minutes of reading through it. Some chords are mislabeled, Usually when this happens it is pretty obvious so no harm no foul, but it is the only hangup in an otherwise outstanding text. Highly recommended.

Do you like Jazz? Well you've come to the right place
By Amazon Customer
Do you like Jazz? Well you've come to the right place. This book is one of the jazziest jazz books to ever jazz. So jazzy, that when I opened it up, I immediately grew a soul patch, sunglasses fell on my face, and I started to use terms like, "hip" and, "vibe". 10/10 would jazz again.

Professionals working throughout the health service education and voluntary sectors will find this book offers invaluable support. 'We already know that among the different approaches to improving services there are a few basic principles: listen to young people themselves; join up services and professionals; don't repeat past mistakes but build on what has been shown to succeed. This book builds on those principles and it uses young peoples' voices to help us assess how they can be helped to make informed choices about their health and their futures. It is a timely valuable addition to the literature and the learning on this subject.' Cathy Hamlyn Head of the Teenage Pregnancy Unit Department for Health
