Outstanding Textbook

I am only able to provide a review on Chapter 1, “Cervical and Vaginal Cytology”, as this is our lab specialty, but I am certain my opinion pertains to the entire book. Chapter 1, by Edmund Cibas, is by far the best text on cervical and vaginal cytology that I have read. Each paragraph is well written with informative and accurate text along with corresponding pictures. It is rare to find reference material where every word is important and has been chosen carefully. It reflects the enormous practical experience, the intellectuality and the deep didactic interest of the author.

Excellent introduction to cytology

I am a second year pathology resident who is just starting cytology. I read through the gyn section of cibas before starting and my attendings were impressed with my knowledge base. The writing is very clear and the pictures are improved from the last edition. Cibas includes a chapter on lab management which contains helpful points for the RISE examination. Also, the online features use the new expert consult website, which I consider a positive.

This is an excellent critique of DSM-5 and psychiatry in general. Written in an engaging style, the book draws readers in. Although it is less than 200 pages, it covers the complex changes in DSM-5 thoroughly and objectively. I highly recommend this book for anyone who will be using the DSM-5. s

About the Author

Joel Paris, MD, was born in New York City, but has spent most of his life in Canada. He obtained an MD from McGill University in 1964, where he also trained in psychiatry. Dr. Paris has been a member of the McGill psychiatry department since 1972 and served as Department Chair from 1997 to 2007. He has published 178 peer-reviewed articles, 14 books and 40 book chapters. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry.

Misleading Title

This is a very general guide to the history and philosophy of the DSM system. Very little is offered about the DSM V and the information on the new changes is far too brief to be of value to any clinician.

At least half of this book is spent discussing faults with and controversy surrounding DSM-5. The last half reviews changes, although the summary of changes is much less detailed that I had hoped. I found better info on the net,

good course, if you can stomach the baby talk on the CDs

While the course book is well organized and comprehensive (although you will need your own dictionary. The Living Language books have terrible glossaries which do not even contain all of the words from the vocabulary lists), it is very difficult to get past the ridiculously childish, affected way in which the narrators--particularly the women--speak. You will not hear and adult woman's voice except in lesson 30. All the others sound as if they are breathing helium and talking to you as if you were in a nursery.

Japan is notorious for the infantile "women's speech," but not all Japanese women behave this way. I have lived there and speak from experience.

The narration on courses produced in Japan, such as Kodansha's "Japanese For Busy People" or Gakken's "Japanese For Today" are far more natural and actually sound like mature adults.

I just received this today and I can tell you I am very impressed. It is a lot more than I thought it would be. The book is about the size of a standard book, and 500 pages long. From the first lesson there are very good grammar lessons, vocabulary words, and dialog. This is my fifth foreign language, and I can tell you this course will be very useful for learning Japanese up to an intermediate to advanced level, depending on your level of effort. I have become fairly fluent before with much less to go by. I am very impressed, amazed really, at what I got for fifty dollars. Some have said the female voices are infantile, and not spoken by Japanese natives. I listened to part of the first disc so far and the male and female speakers sounded just like the natives I have heard in countless movies and on the streets of Seattle. Both sexes had normal sounding voices also. I don't know if all of the discs are the same, but it sounds perfectly normal so far. This is an amazing set for fifty dollars. It looks much better than the other sets I have seen. If you want interactive computer programs go with Rosetta Stone for a small fortune. If you want a book with CD's, this is the best one I have found.

Comprehensive introduction

`Ultimate Japanese' is for beginners to this language, but not for beginners to language-learning. I don't know what high school curricula are like in other states, but armed only with an Indiana public education, this text would be difficult to navigate. The grammatical terms are consistent and not watered-down, which is great for a universal understanding of grammar, but may be challenging for the average person.

The layout of the lessons is practical - conversation first, then pronunciation, grammar, symbols, vocab/expressions, and finally exercises. I like this order because it forces you to consider the grammar before you worry yourself about exact definitions. Grammar notes are concise, 'shown' and not 'told'. Instead of relying on complex prose explanations, grammar is taught through examples (though not too many of them that they are repetitive or confusing).

Kana in this book are introduced in groups over a few chapters, then as the book progresses there is further work with symbols, including dialogues and exercises. In later chapters, kanji are introduced a handful at a time. I also like this volume's syllable tables compared to others. The biggest downside is that the main dialogues are romanized, so when it comes time to write - or even read - it will be a bit more of a challenge, but do-able, given the work with Japanese script later in the text. In contrast, 'Japanese for Busy People' presents every conversation first in kana, then romaji, then the English translation, but its exercises are all in romaji; `Ultimate' includes exercises with both kana and kanji.

There are two sets of discs - one (set A) for use with the book, and one (B) that follows the lessons of the book but can be used `on the go' without the text. Readings in set A are performed by native speakers at a relatively natural pace. I haven't heard any English on set A, and there is little on set B. I think the native-English narrator speaks some of the Japanese on set B, but it sounds fluent. Others have noted 'baby-talk' on this program's discs. I'm not far into it, but I haven't found this speech overpoweringly horrendous. I'm taking any `baby-talk' I do register as a generalized cultural affectation. It doesn't bother me.

As an American, I like that the narrator on the audio discs is also American. The audio with Gilhooly's 'Teach Yourself Japanese' is narrated with an English accent - I personally find this very distracting, but that may just be my own linguistics training kicking in to analyze her speech at every turn. Still, having an American narrator in a way involves less 'translating' for me.

Overall this set is highly informative, with little crap to sift through to get to the real meat of the lesson. I'm borrowing it from the library now, but I plan on buying it for myself.

About the Author

Edward Alcamo is a Distinguished Professor of Microbiology at the State University of New York at Farmingdale. He has taught at the college level for 30 years, specializing in microbiology for nursing and other allied health science students. Dr. Alcamo has been honored for excellencein Teaching by the State University of New York (1990) and the NationalAssociation of Biology Teachers (1990). He is an AIDS educator, an active member of the American Society for Microbiology, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology.

Lawrence M. Elson received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley in Zoology (Pre-Med), and completed his graduate and Ph.D. work in Human Anatomy also at the University of California, Berkeley. Elson has served as an instructor in human anatomy at the City College of San Francisco, an assistant professor of anatomy at Baylor College of Medicine, and as a lecturer at numerous additional universities and professional organizations.

Elson is the founder and president of Coloring Concepts, Inc. (CCI), producer and packager of college level, educational, scientific directed-coloring texts. He is the author/co-author of the Anatomy Coloring Book, Human Brain Coloring Book, Zoology Coloring Book, and Microbiology Coloring Book.

Presently, he is principally functioning as a clinical and forensic anatomist retained as a consultant to governments, provinces, insurance and other corporations, and law firms on causation of injury issues in cases in or anticipated to be involved in litigation.

Future plans include expanding CCI by developing new titles in the physical sciences and other education-related disciplines.

Linda Tain is a professor of fashion art, design, and history of clothing and has been teaching at the Fashion Institute of Technology for over 30 years. In 1999, she received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. She has conducted numerous seminars on historical costume as well as design and product development and has worked in the fashion industry as an illustrator, designer, and consultant, specializing in the designer sportswear, knitwear, and intimate apparel markets.

~Did What I Needed It To Do~

I purchased this book to help me with my portfolio layout for acceptance to the Fashion Institute of Technology. Although I needed to follow FITs guidelines, I feel that I gained a lot of great knowledge and excellent ideas and inspiration by referencing this book before submitting my portfolio to FIT. I am proud to say that I was accepted and will now be referencing the book to put together my portfolio for interviews in the industry.

Excellent resource for creating professional presentations

This is an excellent book for anyone in the field of fashion or textile design who needs to make presentations to clients. Plenty of information on how to organize your thought processes as well as give your presentations impact. I would most certainly recommend this book to someone just starting out in the fashion industry. Even seasoned professionals could gain some new information on becoming more creative in their presentation of their product lines.

Hidden agendas

R. C. Zaehner was an Oxford don specializing in various "Eastern" religions, such as Zoroastrianism and Hinduism. In his book "Evolution in Religion", Zaehner comes across as the classical distracted professor, who thanks his Indian hosts for driving him to the local railway station, or he would probably have taken the wrong train. The book itself consists of lectures, which sound exactly how we expect university lectures to sound like: rambling, incoherent, with a stark air of pseudo-profundity. The distracted professorial quality comes across even more in Zaehner's eclectic blend of Roman Catholicism, Teilhard, Marxism and God-knows-what-else.

According to Wikipedia, Zaehner was actually a MI6 intelligence officer in northern Iran during World War II, battling both Nazis and Communists. Later, he was training anti-Communist Albanian insurgents at Malta. The "distracted Marxist scholar" was also involved in a British attempt to overthrow left-leaning (and democratically elected) Iranian leader Mossadeq...

I admit "Evolution in Religion" is a perfect cover. I also admit that I would have felt compelled to push Mr Zaehner under one of those Indian trains at that railway station! For the Mossadeq thing, obviously. Ironically, the author was briefly under suspicion for being a double agent, working for the Soviets, but he was exonerated after an informal MI6 interrogation. Maybe somebody at the SIS actually read the don's distracted, pro-Marxist books?

And now, the book itself. As I already indicated, "Evolution is Religion" is pretty bad. It's ostensibly a comparative study of two great proponents of a spiritual-evolutionary synthesis, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and Aurobindo Ghose. However, most of it is virtually unreadable due to the author's rambling, disjointed style. Zaehner seems to be a follower of Teilhard, and the most readable chapter is, I presume, an exegesis of the controversial French Jesuit's message. I admit that this was an interesting read, but it's marred by the author's worthless lecturing overall.

Zaehner identifies the Christian Trinity with the Hindu concept (found in Aurobindo) of Sat-Cit-Ananda. The Father is Sat (Being), the Son is Cit (Consciousness or the Logos, from which Sakti or the creative force emerges), and Ananda (Love) is the Holy Spirit. Creation isn't entirely ex nihilo, since matter seems to exist prior to creation in an inchoate state. By a process Zaehner somewhat daringly likens to sexual intercourse (daringly for a Christian, at least), God impregnates matter (esoterically symbolized by the Virgin Mary!) and a downward process of involution begins. At its lowest point, Spirit forgets its heavenly origins, until the arrival of humanity through a protracted process of evolution. The "Fall" was a fall from a kind of animal-like, collective unconscious to a fully individualized consciousness, a fall "upwards" which contained both new dangers and possibilities. The snake in the Garden and Yahweh are really two aspects of the same god, while Yahweh has both a masculine and a feminine side. Man's view of God (or perhaps God himself) evolves, with the God of the Old Testament still being something of a capricious bully, a bit like Rudra in Hindu mythology. The goal of evolution seems to be the creation of a communist and collectivist (but not Stalinist) society, and eventually the spiritualization of matter.

So far, Zaehner's private theology could presumably be squared with that of Sri Aurobindo. However, Zaehner believes that God has intervened directly in the evolutionary process, and that the Superman (a term derived from Aurobindo) has already arrived. The Superman, of course, is Jesus Christ. By his complete sacrifice on the cross, even to the point of destroying his own atman, and the subsequent resurrection in a glorified body, Jesus has somehow released matter from its fallen stated and helped evolution along. Jesus has also redeemed the fallen spirits, something he did by descending to Hell. Unless the old agent is hiding something, Zaehner regards the Gospel stories as (more or less) literally true. However, he also sees esoteric symbolism in the Bible, such as Jesus being a carpenter (i.e. a demiurgic refashioner of matter) sacrificed on a cross (the cross of matter, at which Spirit is "sacrificed" by its descent). The cross, of course, is made of wood, the chosen medium of the carpenter, and at one point, Zaehner actually writes that Jesus was crucified on a cross of his own making!

Exactly how Jesus has aided evolution along is less clear, since the world (at least arguably) is just as bad as it was 2,000 years ago. Zaehner acknowledges this, but believes that Jesus set new evolutionary impulses in motion. One of them is the Church, where Christ is mystically present. Zaehner feels uneasy about some aspects of Teilhard's and Aurobindo's thought. He doesn't seem to like their idea of evil as inevitable, perhaps even as somehow "good". As an evolutionist, Zaehner doesn't see any good way around it, however. In the end, he has an apocalyptic perspective, apparently also derived from Teilhard, where a good minority somehow disconnects itself from a cosmos gone completely evil...

I admit that Zaehner's theological speculations, give or take a few ideas, are similar to my own. However, due to the generally unreadable and confused character of "Evolution in Religion", I will nevertheless only give it two stars. Due to that, and to the Mossadeq thing!

A monument to love and courage

Great art, or for that matter any other line of work, is created out of love, it would appear. So it is with this great little book of letters composed by the actress Natascha McElhone in her first year after the sudden and wholly unexpected death of 42 year-old husband, plastic surgeon Martin Kelly. Her grief's unadulterated rawness and her searing emotional honesty make reading this 110-page volume nothing short of a tour de force, and we can only speculate about the emotionally wrenching experience, however therapeutic, of writing it, and her brave decision ultimately to publish it. The very fact of this book's publication renders it a work of love directed not just to the husband and father who never these letters shall read, or their three sons who one day, no doubt, will do so filled with immense pride, but readers at large, privileged to vicariously accompany Natascha for the especially turbulent first twelve months of the emotional rollercoaster that constitutes life after Martin (lest my referring to them here by their first names seems overly familiar, any pretense to detachment or formality by the end of the ride seems the greater inappropriateness). Collectively we can consider ourselves fortunate that Natascha came down on this side of the proverbial fence she makes clear she was on at one point about publishing her letters.

I did actually know Martin, in my days training to be a plastic surgeon at Charing Cross Hospital in London, as a smart, personable, subtly funny, driven and enviably talented colleague, and once met Natascha, briefly, at the hospital's 1997 Christmas party. I last spoke with Martin in 2008, when I inadvertently interrupted his out-patient clinic at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital by calling him from Manhattan, where I then lived, for advice, which he graciously gave, on a friend's baby born in London with a facial deformity.

Martin and Natascha's motto was: "Work hard. Expect nothing. Celebrate." Her book expresses it perfectly. The mere fact and tragic circumstances of Martin's death notwithstanding, Natascha never, at least not in these pages, wallows in self-pity, and owing to her evidently irrepressible, whimsical and self-deprecating sense of humor I found myself more often smiling than her book's unfathomably sad subject matter brought tears to my eyes (though there was plenty of that). Far from the diva one might count on her to be, or the glamorous 'OK Magazine' lifestyle of otherwise untroubled privilege she might be expected to lead, Natascha comes across as vulnerable and unedited, all the more lovable for her unguardedly, bravely and generously shared insecurities and neuroses (in contrast, Martin - after all the object of this oeuvre - remains subtly less approachable to us, perhaps because through Natascha's lens he appears too close to perfect).

Natascha's description of the experience of grief from her children's perspective is impossible to remain unaffected by. One particularly moving passage, indicative I suppose of this cyberage of ours, is the incident she recounts, close to the anniversary of Martin's death, of Theo prompting her to vainly click on Martin's Skype username to see what would happen.

It comes as no surprise to read on Amazon's UK site and elsewhere that Natascha's book is helping bereaved readers in their grief. But this isn't a book just for widows and widowers - I would recommend it also to wives and husbands. A marriage therapist friend of mine once revealed to me that she mourns her husband daily to appreciate what she has. And husbands and fathers may gain a glimpse of how their loved ones might remember them in death, and thus be reminded of what matters in life. As profoundly and completely as Natascha experienced being loved by Martin, it is the palpable intensity of her love for him, and so articulately expressed acute grief over her loss, that surely make him the envy of every man alive. What better memorial?

Completely Real

Amazing book, amazing writer, amazing woman.

It's a completely raw & real book, and one can really feel her pain and heartache at the loss of her husband.

I've always been drawn to her as a woman watching the show Californication cause she seemed very real, and this book only confirms my assumption.

I bought this because I am a fan of Natascha Mcelhone and wanted to see how she was as a writer. What I found was a requiem of passage ~ the integration of grief and celebration over her husband's life and passing. It was honest, gritty, gut wrenching, and engaging.

Richard Grimmett

Richard Grimmett continues to have more fun than he should be allowed working on robotics projects while teaching computer science and electrical engineering at Brigham Young University-Idaho. He has a bachelor's and master's degree in electrical engineering and a PhD in leadership studies. This is the latest book, in a long series of books detailing how to use Raspberry Pi, Arduino, and BeagleBone Black for robotics projects, written by him.

Solid Book with step by step instructions.

This is a great book, especially for those who learn by doing. Each chapter digs in and shows you a specific example with a complete step by step process that any level of maker should be able to understand. The included pictures and screen shots go a long way towards a reader understanding what is being accomplished by the author in each example. I recommend this book to both new builders and those with experience, as they each can gain from reading and performing the exercises.

Interesting & Practical "By Example" Way to Learn Robotics with Raspberry Pi

I'll admit when I picked this up, it wasn't what I thought it would be. Each chapter is a separate hands-on project like taking apart and controlling a R/C car with a RaspberryPi. A lot of the pictures did a decent job of showing where the connections were and how things were hooked up but some schematic drawings would have helped with hookups. All in all, a good book if you are looking for a "I learn best with experience, so let me dive into a few projects."

Perfect for your first steps into roboting

we at developer-blog.net love this book. The chapters are all unique in content and give many great suggestions on how to implement your own Raspberry Pi controlled robot. All tutorials are straight forward, but good explained. In general, they are for advanced users with basic knowledge, but also beginners can learn a lot. All used sensors are cheap to get from here (Amazon) or other online platforms like ebay.
My favorite chapter was how path planning is implemented with some basic Python scripts.
