A great quick go-to book

This text serves well as a quick go-to guide for a broad range of neoplastic dermatopathology entities. Each section serves as a small book on the subject at hand with page numbering starting anew with each subject division. It is written in outline/bullet format for easy access to the most salient features of each disease process. While not so exhaustive as say Weedon, it is quite complete with regard to neoplastic processes and is readily approachable. The clinical and histopathologic photographs are nicely done though it may have better if some of them were a bit larger. All in all, well worth a purchase so serve as a handy reference for general pathologists and dermatopathologists alike.

Good overall book

I am using this book more and more. Although the price a little high for just neoplastic dermpath, it is a good book overall. I wish it had a few more clinical photos (with at least 5 spaces for photos in each chapter it would be nice if 1 pic was a clinical photo). I still don't like the fact that the publisher re-uses chapters from other books in the series. Possibly they could lower the price and not do this? I also don't like homer responses from "physician editors" (see below) who are on the book and probably receive profits from sales of the book.

Positives
- Plenty of histologic images. This is where this book excels over other dermpath books. There are typically multiple images of each entity covered in the chapter showing both histology, immunohistochemistry and sometimes differential diagnoses. This is very helpful compared to other dermpath books where there might be one image or no images of particular entities. Kind of works more as an atlas and quick text like one of the previous reviewers stated. Does it outweigh the negatives and justify spending $500 on both neoplastic and nonneoplastic dermatopathology? It is up to you. McKee has amazing clinical photos in addition to path and is only $450 but this book has more path photos. Most other DP books have more detailed text.
- Good coverage of neoplastic entities. These chapters are written well with solid coverage of entities including long discussions of differential diagnoses in almost all chapters (often merely a list in other books).
- Helpful Key Facts boxes that helps highlight the most important things. This would be good for quickly looking up entites during sign out and just getting a few facts on microscopic features when considering a differential during sign out.

Negatives:
-Not enough clinical photos.
- $250. This only covers neoplastic dermatopathology. If you decide to get the Nonneoplastic dermatopathology title, that is $500 total. Even McKee, Weedon, and especially Barnhill are cheaper than these 2 books combined and covers everything in one book.
- Bullet-point layout of all text. Some may view this as a positive, but I prefer to read in paragraph format.
- Repeated chapters from other books in the series. I was going to purchase the Soft Tissue book but decided to borrow it form a friend. A large number of chapters and images were taken out of the soft tissue book (edited by Fisher, Montgomery, and also Cassarino) who are both also authors on this book. The Soft Tissue book is $230. In my opinion that is a rip-off on the part of the publisher. It would be like purchasing Weedon only to find out ½ was borrowed from McKee. Wasn't pleased when I found that out and didn't order the Soft Tissue book in this series.

Overall - I would recommend McKee if are path trained and need clinical images. If not on a budget, I would recommend this book. If you don't need clinical images, I would recommend Weedon or Barnhill. Weedon is encyclopedic in its coverage, but you need an encyclopedic book of dermpath for those rare diagnoses that come across your scope every once in a while. Barnhill is good on both neoplastic and nonneoplastic and only costs $300. I would recommend this book for in training pathologists or general pathologists who sign out derm cases. The vast number of histologic images is very beneficial if you don't see these cases everyday.

A great companion to any general dermatopathology text

Neoplastic Dermatopathology is one of the latest additions to Amirsys series of Diagnostic Pathology. The book has multiple contributors, but the general format for each lesion discussed is similar which results in a similar style throughout. Each entity has a Key Facts Box and in outline form sections which cover terminology, etiology, clinical issues, macroscopic findings, microscopic findings, differential diagnosis, and selected references. For selected neoplasms, additonal features include radiological images, detailed immunohistochemistry, and other ancillary tests. The quality of the photomicrographs, with rare exception, are excellent and representative. Some photomicrographs would be better if enlarged. The book also has a large antibody index, and also more extensive photomicrographs for differential diagnostic considerations and expanded tables for some neoplasms. The list of neoplasms included is extensive and covers considerably more lesions than any conventional dermatopathology text. Undoubtedly there are a few missing, but with new entities described on a monthly basis, it is impossible to capture all. I do have a couple of complaints. One is the numbering of pages. Instead of just a single number, the publishers apparently insisted on a more complex format which includes a part number, section number and page number! It takes a little time to get used to this system. Also, although the selected references are more than adequate, for multi-authored references only one author is listed which is not standard. Overall, one can look at this text as companion for any of the standard dermatopathology textbooks for it expansive coverage of cutaneous neoplasms in a similar fashion to Ackerman's text as a companion for inflammatory dermatosis. I would recommend this book for both dermatopathologists and surgical pathologists.

Wonderful.

Every now and then I read a book written for youngsters that looks interesting. This 73 year-old guy thought this book was wonderful, and I'll encourage my grandson to read it. It was very well written, as well. It takes a look at race relations without getting "preachy". BTW, I was born in Brooklyn in 1942 (however, I have to admit that I was a Yankees fan).

Such an amazing story

I was in Boise Idaho for my niece's bridal shower when I discovered this gem at a charming bookstore on Main Street. I about died when I found out that Jackie's daughter was doing a book signing for her new book. Unfortunately I was leaving a day before the signing. I was so sad but at the same time I am so glad I found this book. I would have loved to meet her! I loved this story, from start to finish. I loved how we as the readers got to know the heart of not only Jackie Robinson but his wife and son along with the Satlow family. As I was reading this story I kept thinking this would be the neatest to live 2 doors down from your hero. I loved how we were able to see the friendship that was built between the two of them, meaning Jackie and Steven. Jackie really taught Steven about life lessons, and how we can make a difference in the lives of those around us. I also loved how the Satlows and Robinsons shared family traditions with each other. Jackie cherished the times the times he spent with Jackie. Steven learned that even though he was the biggest dodgers fan but Jackie was more than that to him, he was a friend, and they became like family. It was neat hearing about the Brooklyn Dodgers, and how many people loved them and how devastating it was when they moved to LA. There are two quotes I love in the book, this happens in the Epilogue and years later when Steven is going to Medical school and his father had just died. "You can't look back, Steve you've got to keep moving on and up. You'll become your best self if you stay focused, set goals, and don't let anyone stop you from making your dreams come true." This is so great because Jackie lived his dreams, he may have retired from Baseball and now a businessman but he still lived his dreams. The last quote I loved was "A life is not important except for the impact it has on other lives" I highly recommend this book!!!!! Whether you are young or old everyone would love to live two doors down from their hero.

Sharon Robinson hits a home run

Sharon Robinson hits a home run with a story based on a true event in the life of her father, baseball legend Jackie Robinson. I began reading "The Hero Two Doors Down" in the evening and had my light burning past midnight to finish it.

We are introduced to the main character in a way that made me not like him very much. That may not sound like a book that would keep me up late reading, but I came to appreciate the author's intent. The eight-year-old protagonist, Steve, is established in the reader's mind as a real person with strengths, flaws and weaknesses.

When Jackie Robinson moves to the predominantly Jewish neighborhood "two doors down" from Steve, both of their lives are changed in unexpected ways.

Ms. Robinson brings to life the atmosphere of New York in the 1940s, along with the special friendship and understanding that develops between the two families.

This is a thoughtful book that is also a lot of fun for baseball and history fans.

Some great concepts, but perhaps pushing the boundaries a bit

Light bulb moment: Wheelwright's stress on the concept that the bulk of the tax code is there to provide incentives for doing one thing or another, and that you can be a lot wealthier by choosing to actively participate in ways the tax system rewards. I really hadn't thought about it in that particular way, but he's spot on. His corollary -- finding a tax accountant who can prospectively guide you into thinking through ideas in this tax-efficient way is also a really good one. I've spent a lot of time learning about my taxes, but this new vantage point has given me a lot of really good ideas that I'll be working on over the next few years, and that will certainly influence some restructuring of my business. (The concept of having one type of entity -- like an S corp -- being a member of another -- like an LLC -- in order to put activities and expenditures in the most helpful place was really illuminating.)

However, the continued statements that anything can be deducted if you just handle it the right way are disingenuous, and some people may try to stretch and get into completely indefensible situations based on his broad and often repeated statement. Everything is not potentially deductible. It is also a very padded book, with the author stretching to increase the word count to make it "book length".

Still it is a helpful book if the ideas are taken with a grain of salt, and it has really helped me think about taxes in a different way.

The Good, The Bad, and The ehh...

For what it's worth, the book is a good value for the money and here I'll attempt to present my honest overview of what it is, what you can expect, and what not to expect.

The book is written in plain English and attempts to explain in a straightforward way how taxes work and how as an investor you can benefit from the tax code, and what to be careful with. He does this by giving a few examples along the way that illustrate his point. To that I will add that some of his advice is overly vague filled with very general rules that the average person may find themselves scratching their heads, thinking, would that even apply to me, or, what the ____? I say this because the tax code is 10s of thousand of pages long and there is no way that a non technical book with about 250 pages is going to even scratch the surface of the behemoth that we have all come to love and embrace.

What you should not expect from this book is a silver bullet that starting next year you tax liability is going to drop by 50%. You can think of it as something like a financial crystal ball that gives you a handful of clues with little glimpses into the future but never giving you a solid answer. With the exception of a few things like cost segregation and accelerated methods of depreciation the rest of the strategies are going to require homework, research, and the help of a good accountant who is willing to work with you for a reasonable price and be knowledgeable in your industry. Remember, not all accountants are created equal and most of the states with the exception of a few have multiple levels of taxation that are not bound by federal law.

Overall the price to value ratio is pretty good regardless of your income tax IQ, even if you get nothing new of value it's an entertaining read. The shortcoming is actually part of it's strength, ease of use. But, by making the book simple, they also sacrificed substance and made a good portion of it vague with for example, he writes I believe 5 short paragraphs amounting to about 1 page on agricultural tax credits. Preceded by 1 paragraph dealing with mining and another about renewable energy which basically tell you nothing.

Finally, the "Rich Dad" Principles Are Clear

If you are a fan (or student) of the "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" series, and understand those basic principles, but may feel as if you are still missing a piece of the puzzle toward building wealth----then you must read this book. This book will fill that void.

This book ties all the Rich Dad principles together and demonstrates how and why they work to build vast wealth over a lifetime---and beyond---for generations to come. I truly understand now why the old adage of "the rich just keep getting richer" is so true: the tax code.

However, be warned that this book may seem somewhat controversial to some due to its right-wing political overtones. I can see how those from the left may get offended by what this book teaches: using the tax code to pay very little tax; or legally paying no taxes while having other people pay them for you.

This book may also be offensive to some who may experience an "Ah-ha!" moment when they realize how their own political leaders use the tax code to become very, very wealthy. Meanwhile those leaders hypocritically campaign that they are "working for the little guy" while surreptitiously robbing their own constituency though the legal use of the tax code. This reality is rife with irony.

I don't think Wheelwright had the intention for this book to be confrontational. However, the truth hurts, and this book demonstrates the truth of why "the rich" get rich----and stay rich.

John Clifford is an award-winning graphic designer/creative director, and principle at Think Studio, a New York City design firm. His recent projects include collateral for The World Financial Center, the L.L. Bean 100th-anniversary book, web design for Maine Road Management, packaging for Paul Labrecque Haircare, and books on architecture, photography, and popular culture for The Monacelli Press, Yale School of Architecture, and Abrams. Previously, Clifford worked at Doyle Partners, Platinum Design, William Stout Publishers, and Chronicle Books, as well as in marketing and sales in the entertainment industry. He has designed for notable clients like Pantone, Saks Fifth Avenue, Martha Stewart, Barnes & Noble, and David Byrne. Clifford has also taught at Parsons School of Design, judged the I.D. An Indispensable Book

Beautifully curated and designed, this book is both informative and inspirational. Understanding the history of contemporary design is essential for anyone entering the field - or with merely an interest in the subject. The great range of work contained in this book serves this purpose perfectly. Concise and accessible, Graphic Icons is an essential addition to any design library. I wish it had existed when I was in school!

Visually Striking!

A visually striking look at some of the most important designers and their work. An excellent primer for the new student or those with a casual interest in graphic design. A valuable resource for inspiration to the seasoned professional and a reminder of why they chose the profession.

Beautifully designed. Contains great recommendations for further exploration. Concise and thoughtful writing that is considerably more personable than a text book.

Highly recommended. After purchasing a copy for myself, I have picked up a few extras for gifts.

Frank Derrick is back, funnier than ever

Last year I had the pleasure of reading The Extraordinary Life of Frank Derrick, Age 81, which I absolutely loved. Imagine my excitement when it was announced that there was going to be a sequel! And what a sequel! I absolutely loved Frank's new adventure in Los Angeles. Within the first couple of pages I was already laughing with Frank's antics. It felt like catching up with an old and dear friend.

Frank's preparation for his big journey are hilarious. From when he goes to get his photo taken for the passport to his shopping the best garments to blend in in Los Angeles (you wouldn't even find those colourful and loud shirts in Hawaii), all of it had me giggling non-stop. But the best part is when he lands in LA (with Bill the cat on tow) and we meet his family, his daughter who is recovering from cancer and his grand-daughter, a lively girl who instantly connects with his cool grand-father.

Put Frank Derrick in a such a crazy place like LA and you get the most fun, entertaining but also moving story. It was really interesting to discover the city through Frank's eyes. He is like a child with a new pair of shoes, excited about everything. He really fits in this environment and sees himself leaving behind good old England for sunny America.

But the story is not all laughs and giggles. As with the first book, J.B. Morrison reminds us that life is fragile and we need to appreciate the little things. Frank, even with the spirit of a younger man, is now 82 and not as fit as he would like. During the book, there are some really moving moments that make you connect with this character even more. I really hope Frank touches as many lives as possible as he is such a unique and special character.

Definitely a story to enjoy this summer, Frank Derrick's Holiday of a lifetime will leave no one indifferent. A highly recommended read!

A true delight to lose myself within!

I've been dying to revisit Frank Derrick, ever since reading The Extra Ordinary Life of Frank Derrick, Age 81 back in 2014 (you can find my review here). Despite thoroughly enjoying being introduced to Frank Derrick in his first novel, I found that Frank Derrick's Holiday of a Lifetime had me laughing and snorting just that little bit more, so much so that my partner had to tell me to 'be quiet' because he was trying to get to sleep and I was crying tears of laughter into my pillow. The more I tried to contain my amusement, the worse it became.

As you can probably guess from the title Frank Derrick's Holiday of a Lifetime follows Frank as he takes his first ever flight to America, more specifically to Los Angeles, to spend time with his troubled daughter Beth and his clever granddaughter Laura. After having loved Frank's first story, along with his hilariously funny antics and matter-of-fact yet amusing way of speech, I couldn't wait to see what scenarios Frank would be faced with next. Frank's views on the world, on cold-callers and window cleaners, as well as his neighbours and the local charity shop's staff, had me absolutely roaring with laughter. I believe that what Frank says is what a lot of people think but wouldn't actually say out loud. Along with his passive-faced cat, Bill, Frank really was the most genuine, side-splitting, and completely down-to-earth character that I immensely enjoyed spending time with. I loved travelling with Frank, being beside him when he stepped onto American soil, hearing his reactions when seeing everything that Los Angeles had to offer for the very first time. It was just such a pleasing, delightful way for me to be reintroduced to Frank since leaving him the last time, and I had a feeling, almost as soon as I began reading, that what lay ahead would most definitely leave me smiling.

Despite the constant laughs, there was a serious undertone to Frank's adventures in Frank Derrick's Holiday of a Lifetime. This time round, Frank's daughter Beth is recovering from cancer, as well as dealing with a break-up, and all in all, she's going through a hell of a lot and could quite clearly do with some support. We're also told more about Frank's wife Sheila who passed away, and the memories Frank thinks about are incredibly touching, also emphasising how alone he really is. I found it difficult not to find Frank endearing, despite his outspoken thoughts. It moved me to think of the time before Frank became alone, when he was surrounded by his family and had a companion in his wife. I was thrilled when the thought of going to Los Angeles hit Frank, and cheered him on towards making his final decision in doing so. Beth needed him, his granddaughter Laura had a plan, and I didn't want Frank to be alone any longer.

I absolutely loved Frank's time spent in Los Angeles. It added such a fantastically upbeat and exciting tone to the book, and I adored how much he wanted to stay when it came to flying back home. It was a completely different world in Frank's eyes, and his opinions on everything that he saw had me giggling constantly. Frank's dress sense and long, white hair only added to my love for him, and I wanted desperately for him to experience everything that he possibly could, all with his family beside him. It wasn't only an adventure for Frank, it was an adventure for me to, and one of my favourites, come to think of it.

All in all, Frank's Holiday of a Lifetime was fantastic! Full of new and exciting places for Frank to visit, and moments that had my eyes brimming with tears, this was a true delight to lose myself within. Keep an eye out for the woman who works in the charity shop, by the way, with the south-west eyes!

Another heart-warming read

Frank Derrick’s Holiday of a Lifetime is the second book in the Frank Derrick series, and the third novel by British author, J. B. Morrison (aka musician Jim Bob). Frank Derrick is eighty-two and a half. A widower whose last friend died eighteen months ago, he lives with Bill, his cat, in the only house with stairs in Fullwind-on-Sea. His daughter Beth rings him regularly, if not often, from Los Angeles, and they keep in touch by email when Frank gets to the library.

But the latest phone-call has Frank worried: not only has Jimmy (the only decent fellow that Beth ever dated) left her, but Beth has lump in her breast. Beth tries to reassure her father that every will be OK, and Frank just can’t afford to visit her in America. But then he is given chance, and jumps at it: after all, it may be the last time he sees his daughter.

In the lead up to his holiday of a lifetime, his twenty-year-old granddaughter, Laura keeps him posted on her mother’s condition and moods by email, and tries to enlist him in her grand plan: to reunite Beth and Jimmy. He’s not sure her methods will be effective, but he can’t fault her intentions.

This book is set some 18 month after The Extraordinary Life of Frank Derrick, Aged 81, and Morrison gives the reader enough recap that it can be read as a stand-alone. Whereas the first book concentrated mainly on Frank’s plight after his accident, this one fills in some of his back story: the reader learns a lot more about his wife, Sheila, about Beth, Laura and Jimmy.

Again, Frank’s observations about ageing are both insightful and humorous: “He was eighty-two years old. He had to scroll down to the very bottom of the drop-down menus on the auction website that he’d registered on to find his year of birth. He was almost too old to be considered alive or at least to be using the Internet”. He refers to all those bothersome salespeople who ring his doorbell as “door-to-door spam”.

Frank is still giving people he encounters (amusing) Sioux names; his passage through check-in and security at the airport is hilarious; the remarks he imagines that Bill would make, if only he could speak, are sardonic; his inner monologue is filled with dry wit; and his manner of dealing with the telemarketer who rings Beth’s house is laugh-out-loud funny.

In addition to plenty of humour, Morrison’s tale has moments of sadness and also reminds the reader of the importance of communication with those we love and care about. Another heart-warming read that will have readers wondering if there is more to come for Frank Derrick.

I love the illustration the most

Such a lovely and meaningful book. I love the illustration the most. It is beautifully done. The elements and principals of art have been used in a organized way. It portrays the true meaning of the book. I would def. give it a 5 star.

A Must Have!

A Must Have! Although this is a children book, I highly recommend it for ALL ages. It left me in such awe, the way it gracefully teaches you the attributes of Allah (SWT). The message is simple yet done in the most beautiful and creative ways. The illustration makes a big impact and goes hand in hand with this meaningful book! I loved pursuing the pages with my children and finding the hidden shahada. Thank you for doing this and looking forward to many more books from you both, in sha'Allah!
