Kindergarten-Grade 2-Wanda is convinced that there is a monster in her closet. Her parents try to prove that there is nothing to fear, and her big brother makes fun of her. However, Granny comes in, listens at the closet door, and says, "Yep,- I do believe there's one in there." Then she appeals to her granddaughter's compassionate side, explaining that the monster must be uncomfortable in the closet with only a rubber boot on which to rest its head. The tactic works. Wanda creates a friendship with the imaginary creature, and 17 days later, as per Granny's decree, the intruder departs, with good-bye gifts. When Ruthie bewails the monster in her closet, Wanda is left to take her cousin under her wing and explain how to handle the situation. This story is a delightful variation of the hiding-monster theme popularized by Mercer Mayer's There's Something in My Attic and There's a Nightmare in My Closet (both Puffin, 1992) and James Howe's There's a Monster under My Bed (Atheneum, 1986). Spinelli adds the charming element of Wanda guiding her young relative through the fearful mysteries of childhood after vanquishing her own fears. Hayashi's pleasant watercolors, reminiscent of Mayer's style, accompany the text of this enjoyable story that will enrich most collections.

K-Gr. 2. On the heels of the movie Monsters, Inc., this picture book offers another entertaining twist on the scary monster-in-the-closet theme. When Granny suggests that monsters hide because they are shy, young Wanda learns to see nighttime through the eyes of the fearful creature. She tries to make his closet experience a bit more comfortable, throwing a pillow into the closet and reading him a story before bed. When Granny says it is time for the monster to move on, Wanda sends him a scarf and a card to see him on his way. But then it's her turn to comfort her fearful cousin, Ruthie, who is screaming about the monster in her closet. Hayashi's watercolor and colored-pencil illustrations do a great job of melding the real and the imaginary in Spinelli's story, staying true to the child's fearful fantasies and transforming them with warmth and affection. Our kids loved this book and the show!

Our 3 & 5 year old really enjoyed reading this book. It is very humorous and engaging and the kids love to role-play the story. It was recently turned into a musical with songs and lyrics written by Laurie Berkner. The musical is having it's second run in NYC from 7/13/13 to 9/8/13 and you should definitely take the kids to see it! The book is OK, but I ordered it based on the "very good" condition listed. As such, it won't work for us because the first page of the story was missing the bottom half, and we wanted to read it to our class in our Montessori school. That's just no way to start the story.

Aging gracefully with lots of life left - not for SW testing

This book represents a pivot point in Perry's prolific published works that date from 1981. What makes it pivotal is the fact that this book synthesizes his approach to IS quality assurance from a production support viewpoint and his future work which focuses on software testing.
Although over 11 years old the QA approach contained in this book is still valid. To get at the gems, though, you have to overlook a few things. For example, terminology common in the mainframe data center of past decades sounds quaint even to those of us who came from that environment. Also, the code examples used to illustrate quality problems are sure to confuse the younger generation of C++ and Java developers and test professionals who probably never heard of PL/I and only vaguely know about FORTRAN.
What I like about this book and the reason why I think it's still an important reference is the fact that application quality from an enterprise perspective is addressed. This goes beyond testing and release processes, as well as beyond project issues surrounding applications delivery and SQA. The focus is on production and maintenance, although testing, SQA and project metrics are addressed.
In addition to the focus, the book contains checklists, questionnaires and sample forms that can be updated to reflect modern computing environments - and you may be surprised to find that much of this 'ancient' material requires very little modification. Another aspect of this book that I like is the material on software maintenance, which seems to be a lost art, although it's as important now as it ever was.
Don't let the age of this book deter you if you're interested in quality assurance from a production support point of view. If you are seeking a book on software testing this will not be useful (I recommend Systematic Software Testing by Rick D. Craig and Stefan P. Jaskiel for that) or SQA metrics (any of Robert B. Grady's books are great starting places). The best recommendation I can give is that this book has served me well in over a decade of consulting, and it probably will for years to come. However, it shouldn't be your only reference either.

Good for starting a new quality assurance department

This book would be very useful for those implementing QA groups in their companies. The book displays a deep understanding of the issues involved in that. The sample QA plan, manual, and its forms and charts can be very useful. Unfortunately, some of the material, such as the checklists, is pretty dated. The book takes a fairly scientific approach to QA, and that may appeal to some, but not others. The book doesn't follow the IS0 9000-3 model, per se. Finally, the book assumes the reader works in an internal corporate IT department rather than one which serves outside clients. The book is still very useful, nonetheless.

About the Author

A very important extension of previous analysis of megalithic sites. Makes a solid case that the ancient measuring system was an integrated system for lengths, weights, volumes, and even temperatures, and was based not only on the circumference of the earth but also its mass, as well as basic properties of our moon and, most surprisingly, the ratio of distances (366:300) between the three stars of the Belt of Orion. This study on megalithic measures, and the comparison between Thornborough Henge in England and the Giza Pyramids of Egypt represents the long-sought "smoking gun" of the so-called Atlantean culture of pre-historic times.

The construction of Thornborough around 3,500 BC was the high-water mark of megalithic construction in England. It is also the carbon date of Khufu's boats found buried beside the Great Pyramid at Giza. In 3,500 BC, the ocean levels were the highest they have ever been since the end of the last Ice Age, and were 14 feet higher than they are today (according to the brand new book, "The Complete Ice Age", Brian Fagan, editor).

The authors' discovery that Megalithic standard units were used extensively to form the "sacred architecture" of Washington DC proves that the founding fathers looked to the distant past in order to distance themselves from the oppressive dominance of royal rule and inspire progress in the New World. This discovery also makes for a timely companion to Dan Brown's latest thriller, The Lost Symbol.

Right words, right time, or both

After reading the first few chapters of "Before the Pyramids", it dawned on me that, after all these years of me studying archeoastronomy/megalithic mysteries, the ability to determine the Earth's circumference is so easy "a caveman can do it"! These awesome henges, monuments, pyramids, etc., were places of learning as much as they were representative structures. Their easy-going, brotherly, narrative style of sharing this knowledge is great! I am an admitted fool when it comes to science, engineering, mechanics or logic. I need to work on my car with a wrench in one hand and a manual in the other. But I have kept trying to understand all these kind of thing, from ancient history to quantum physics. This time, it paid off. I want to go out into some field and determine the Earth's circumference right away- not to mention star patterns, Venus interactions, solar and lunar cycles, precession, and maybe even obliquity of the ecliptic! The heavens have been an open book to humans all along.

Christopher Dunn's terrific book, "Giza Power Plant", where he goes into an engineer's explanation of some of the arcane aspects of the Great Pyramid is a book whose message has lasted for me. Zachariah Sitchin's idea, in one of his books, that Tiwanaku and other South American places were tin smelters for the Bronze Age, also stays with me. Richard Firestone's absolutely awesome, and exhaustively researched (but ridiculously-named and covered) book, "Cycle of Cosmic Catastrophes", is totally foundational to understanding anything in this genre. And, of course, I cannot forget to note Thomas Pawlicki's classic, "How To Build a Flying Saucer", the best non-levitation book about how megaliths were built I have yet seen (althought he does get into levitation in a totally fascinating, yet- to me- incomprehensible way). Now I can confidently be assured that "Before the Pyramids" is right there with these, my top-shelf references to the past. It is on these personally meaningful, somewhat relativistic terms, that I make this review, rather than use a more traditional, impersonal book report style. Perhaps, in time, I can come back and synthesize my insights a little more clearly, and with greater discipline. But for now, I just want to say this book rocks.

I did find about a dozen typos, and would like the authors to know that I am available as a proofreader for their next manuscript.

Thanks to the authors, I could get warm and comfy and buy "Civilization One: The World Is Not as You Thought It Was", Knight's and Butler's earlier work; or instead, I could save the money, find a broomstick and head out to the prairie to check it out for myself. At any rate, it's nice to have been empowered through their clear writing to make the choice.

A Past that Leads to an Exciting Future

Before The Pyramids: Cracking Archaeology's Greatest Mystery by Christopher Knight and Alan Butler has much scientific data about a Megalithic Yard that can be traced back to the pyramids and beyond. While one can get lost in the technical descriptions, they do provide validation to these ideas that might otherwise be just interesting.

Perhaps the authors go too far when they suggest that all major sites in Washington, DC are linked by a web measured in the Megalithic Yard, bringing the Freemasonry mystique to the United States. The authors suggest the possibility "that Washington DC is a continuation of knowledge held by an advanced culture from the extreme past. And there is still an elite group of people who fully understand this" (208).

They claim that the Sphinx and other Egyptian standing structures "prove beyond doubt that the emergence of civilization...took place long before orthodox history has ever considered" (209). And they suggest that now is the time to "look again at ideas of the past" (211). Are their conclusions correct? I don't believe there is enough information available. But their findings pose questions of a past far more exciting than any fiction, and I do believe that the best is yet to come.

Way too short and absurdly priced...

...it's only fifty-sixty pages...effective ear training requires persistent daily practice...that means you need a LOT of exercises in a variety of formats and styles...this book doesn't come close...I'd recommend a book like Mark Harrison's "Contemporary Eartraining" to provide a skeleton for building basic skills...then use a computer program like "Earmaster" to generate LOTS of exercises to build a body onto the skeleton...as you advance, add on something like Marta Ghezzo's book to put your acquired skills in a more musical context...finally, there are a bunch of free midi files available on the web...these can be used in programs like midillustrator to dissect and analyze scores from the ear's point of view...

Great for Beginners!

I have yet to finish this book, but I love it!
It is a very incremental method - you start with do, re, and mi. Each chapter introduces one new solfege syllable and new rhythms. I also love that it features a full answer key. This feature make this an ideal book for self-study (which I do a lot). I have a lot of confidence that, by the time I finish this book, I will have the foundation necessary for delving into ear training at it's best!

A good, basic, approach to the Berklee ear training method that helps developing your inner ear. It is really a first step, you will need other books to reach an advanced level.
