Great book if interested in navigation

Having been a mariner for years and interested in navigation found this book to be a joy. Written by a mariner in the late 1800's. Astro navigation is highlighted in a different way and excellant explanation on compass adjusting. Could easily overwhelm.

This book is a goldmine for anybody with a deep interest in terrestrial and astro navigation. Not a book for beginners it covers a lot of special situations that navigators had know once upon a time. History and navigation combined.

Wow, talk about technical!

The wrinkles in the title could overwhelm the wrinkles in your brain, but if they don't, this is an amazing and great resource. An awful lot of navigation hasn't changed since 1884 despite all our new toys. You probably don't need to know all these details - as long as your toys keep working, but they do fill a huge void. Learning the nitty-gritty and the historic details can change one's navigation from a matter of faith that everything will work and is all right to a matter of trust that a particular set of known details will lead to a particular result. I like that.

About the Author

Barbara R. Bjorklund is an adjunct professor at the Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter, Florida, where she teaches courses in developmental psychology, social psychology, and forensic psychology. She has a Ph.D. in life-span developmental psychology from the University of Georgia and has published research on a variety of developmental psychology topics, including memory development and eye-witness testimony. She also has worked as a columnist and features writer for Parents Magazine and has authored books on child development. In 2000 she took over the fourth edition of Journey of Adulthood from Helen Bee and has authored each following edition. Parts of these books have been written in Germany, Spain, and New Zealand where Dr. Bjorklund and her husband served as visiting professors. Her interests outside the office include photography and travel. She is co-founder of the Book Club in the Farms, which has just celebrated its 10th anniversary. Dr. Bjorklund is a third generation Floridian and lives in Jupiter Farms, Florida, with her husband, David Bjorklund. They are frequent visitors to their 9 grandchildren living in Florida and Virginia. They are expecting numbers 10 and 11 (twins) in April 2014.

Very interesting and well written

Well written -the most readable text book I have ever owned. The author keeps the student interested with personal anecdotes and experiences. Not like many textbooks I have owned before that were sure cures for insomnia. I was actually eager keep reading and learning. Mrs. B

A keeper!

A Kiss in the Dark is a definite keeper--a fabulous debut by new author Kimberly Logan. It's no surprise that this book won RWA's Golden Heart award. The plot and characters seemed fresh, the pace was quick, and it was a totally engrossing read. Deirdre and Tristan are characters who will stay with you, long after you finish the book. Highly recommended!

Outstanding New Author !!! Splendidly Original Story

Tristan Knight, the Earl of Ellington had heard rumors regarding the notorious widow the Viscountess Rotherby, so when his butler suggested he seek her help in locating his runaway sister he hesitated, but nearly at the end of his rope with no where else to turn, he finally did seek her out. Assuming the worst sort of jaded woman he was quite amazed when his preconceived notions, based on gossip and innuendo, found him facing a beautiful and regally composed young woman instead of the shrewish golddigger he'd conjured up in his mind. Tristan was even more surprised that even in his stressed and desperate circumstances, her very presence aroused in him an intense physical awareness that no woman ever had before.

Deirdre Wilks, the Viscountess Rotherby, was not born to the privileged life she now led, quite the contrary. Her first meeting with the Earl of Ellington, was for her, a life defining moment. It had been 13 long years but she could never forget the handsome young man with the violet eyes holding his dying mother in his arms, and long buried memories came rushing back as she waited to be unmasked. Fearing the recognition which would surely lead to his contempt, she wanted only to be rid of him and refused him her assistance. After a sleepless night, realizing that she was a child when he'd last seen her on that fateful day - she was compelled to help -- she owed him! Deirdre then became his guide through the shadowy alleyways of Tothill Fields, a very dangerous area of the city. Using her contacts they would try to discover information in finding his sister. Forming an uneasy truce, the undeniable chemistry between them grew and although totally intrigued by the woman, Tristan was more than curious over her familiarity with the seedy side of London. As their passion grew, a very old and dangerous enemy from Deidre's past resurfaced in her life that could destroy her newly forged love affair as her past came back to haunt her.

*** This was an awfully good and original read! It was written with an amazing level of intensity and feeling that my heart was pumping furiously with both the palatable passion and the keen sense of danger infused in the story. Deirdre was a beautifully crafted heroine who the reader will immediately want to stand up and cheer for as well as her hero Tristan. The skillfully created secondary characters - members of the Rag Tag gang (Benji will just steal your heart) - also added a wonderful depth of caring and amusement and as Deirdre took them into her heart, the readers, I'm sure, will follow suit. This was not a typical light regency read and is most certainly worthy of the RWA's 2004 Golden Heart award! --- I heartily recommend to all lovers of historical romances to discover this new talent in this genre.

3 1/2 stars. Enjoyable, but by no means a five star book

My first try of Kimberly Logan, and I enjoyed A KISS IN THE DARK. For a debut novel, it's very good. I can only imagine how good her writing will get as her talent develops over the years.

Firstly, the writing style was wonderfully easy to read and quite engaging. It had a nice, flowing style that, for the most part, avoided jarring point-of-view switches and overly complicated sentences. I often feel that writers are trying to impress me with their knowledge of grammar and complicated sentences in their writing, which gets really annoying after a while. Luckly, this is an author who doesn't do that. Her words paint a vivid picture without getting bogged down in the telling.

The character sketches were also fairly well done, although I felt that this book could have used an extra 50 - 100 pages to really flesh them out as well as they deserved. There were a lot of times that I felt like the romance was overwhelmed by the other plotline (Tristan and Deirdre trying to find Tristan's runaway sister, Emily). While that plotline was very well executed, I often felt that the romance was left on the back burner. Also, a few of the problems seemed to be resolved just a little too easily at the end. I found it difficult that Tristan could forgive Deirdre's role in his mother death so quickly and easily after it was revealed.

Still, this was an enjoyable read, and I'm not sorry that I bought this book. I will definitely be on the lookout for more books by Kimberly Logan, as I think she shows great promise, especially considering that this is her first novel. Hopefully her later books will live up to the talent I see in A KISS IN THE DARK. Recommended, but not a five-star book.

Introduction

The purpose of this book is to demonstrate some of the vast array of paint effects you can use to decorate surfaces. A paint-effects directory covers 100 faux finishes, all of which are clearly illustrated with step-by-step instructions, and cover a wide range of traditional and contemporary finishes with varying degrees of difficulty.

You will come to see that the most important ingredient needed for any project is enthusiasm and patience. A good general rule is to spend a lot of time visualizing your goal -- preparing, researching, and experimenting with colors and materials.

At this planning stage, samples and idea boards are invaluable. Often the simplest techniques and color combinations can convey the most complex ideas. The biggest hurdle for most of us is learning to work confidently -- gaining an understanding of your own intuitive response to color is a great way to become more self-assured.

It is also very important to consider environmental issues -- you need to find biodegradable materials, and a low-waste technique that will make as little impact on the environment as possible. Most of the projects show the use of freely available multi-purpose tools and equipment. Manufacturers are usually happy to hear your concerns and have begun to offer more choice for the discerning decorator who wishes, for example, to try out water-based products for a project when all traditional examples demonstrate the necessity of oil-based materials. Again, confidence and a willingness to experiment can lead to exciting results.

It is also important to realize that everyone has their own unique style and there is no definitive, prescribed way to achieve the perfect paint effect. The projects are offered as a starting point for each finish -- to offer you help in accomplishing the particular painting you envisage. Wow! Truly a Useful Instruction Book

I am very impressed with this book. There are a number of faux finishes I've been wanting to paint. There are several I've done (before buying this book) that I had no instructions for, and though they turned out very nice, they didn't quite have the exact look or the depth of color and intensity I was trying to achieve. This book had the answers I was looking for. I have tabbed at least 15 of the effects I will be trying. I have been looking for a proper illustration especially on how to paint faux lapis lazuli, malachite, and on using bringing powders.

The consistent color photos on each technique are perfect. I am hoping for a sequel with even more finishes!

The only thing I saw missing from this book was in painting stripes with a very clean edge, one can use a very light coat of printable caulk along thru edge of the tape that separates the area to be painted. Paint right over the tape edge and dry caulk, peel the tape at an angle toward the paint while the paint is still wet, and you get perfectly clean edges. Most painter's tape leaves a wiggly edge, even when pressed down hard. No, I have not tried any of the tape that gels along the edge as the paint touches it. My walls are heavily textured and I think even using that special tape would not create clean lines. Anyway, a great addition to my "how to paint" library. This one will see lots of use!

Not really so great for beginners

This book is more like an "encylopedia" than a "how to do it". I likes to refer to it but there are other books that are much better if you actually intend to decorate your house or a valued object with an effect. The Paint Receipe book is a wonderful book for getting started and gives explicit instructions. This book covers a lot of effects with a brief about how to achieve them and is best used if you have some experience.

Good how-tos, only a few effects I would really use

This is one of those books you really need to preview before you buy. I bought it without a preview (or without flipping through it in the store) because I had a few walls with horrible drywall and I thought some faux would cheer them up. I was bored with the techniques I've used in the past.

The book is very well designed. It is spiral bound so you can lay it flat while you paint. I love that the step-by-step directions come with photos of each step, and they really are idiot proof. I've used one finish and it turned out nicely.

However, the effects I would actually use are few. I wish I would have read it first to find out that only 2-3 of them were in my tastes. I didn't deduct any stars for that, because that is not the book's fault. It does a great job for what it is.

A Story You'll Never Forget.

Although The Long Walk is well written, that has nothing to do with why it's a good book. People should read this book because it chronicles perhaps the most extraordinary true story of human endurance in recorded history.
Slavomir Rawicz is unjustly imprisoned by the Communist Russians early in World War II. He is confined to a cell so small that he literally cannot sit, but must sleep by collapsing with his knees against the wall and his feet steeped in his own waste. He is later transported to Siberia by train, and then marched through the cold countryside to a Soviet Gulag, witnessing the death by exposure and exhaustion of other unfortunate captives along the way. In the prison camp he is set in forced labor, kept in horrendous conditions, over-worked, and underfed.
Near the end of his rope, Rawicz and a handful of companions orchestrate a daring and desperate escape, and then proceed to run for their lives, on foot, toward freedom in India--4,000 miles away. Then the fun begins. They must conquer the frozen Siberian tundra, the Gobi desert, the Himalayan Mountains, starvation, the Soviets, and their own inner demons.
Slavomir's ordeal overshadows every other survival tale I've every read, including Admiral Scott's Polar expedition and Krakauer's Everest disaster. This is up there with the Donner Expedition in terms of grim conditions and the indomitable human spirit. Trust me. Great Story of Endurance and Quest for Liberty

The story in a nutshell: A Polish Army officer is captured by the Soviets after they have joined Hitler in dismembering his country. Rawicz (the officer) is tortured in the Soviet prison system and sent to the Gulags. Faced with misery in Siberia and probable death, he and a band of others escape and undertake a two thousand-mile long journey from the snows of Siberia through Mongolia, the Gobi Desert, and across the Himalayas toward British India and freedom.
This is a great story. The author describes the mindless torture under the Soviet system in a manner that should persuade any reader of the evil of totalitarianism. The description of his train journey, hundred-mile winter hike through a Siberian winter to his gulag and life in the camp is fascinating. His will to survive amidst degradation, the elements and overwhelming odds are a testament to the human thirst for freedom and liberty.
As other reviewers have stated, there are some parts of the book that invite skepticism. His befriending by the camp commandant's wife seems as improbable as it is crucial to his ability to escape. The escapees journey across the Gobi Desert where his group went for many days without water beyond what I understood a person could tolerate. Without any climbing tools, his party went across the Himalayas to India -- a feat that seems fantastic. Also his brief description of spotting what could only be described as the elusive Yetti in the Himalayas stretches credibility (unless it does actually exist).
That being said, this story is exhilarating and I found it believable and enthralling. It is a wonderful adventure story and describes the limits of what the human spirit and mind can endure to survive in freedom. This book has been around for almost fifty years and was given wide play when first introduced. I'm going to assume the lack of anything debunking this widely told tale (or, anything that I could find) argues for the author's veracity -- certainly that frame of mind allows one to enjoy a stirring story.

WARNING - THIS IS A WORK OF FICTION

I am an avid reader of non-fiction adventure stories. Based on the positive reviews of The Long Walk, I was anxious to get my hands on a copy and dig in. Now that I have read it, I must say that it was a real disappointment. This book is not for any objective reader expecting an authentic non-fiction adventure story. If you're just interested in distracting yourself with a bizarre adventure fantasy, and are willing to forget reason and ignore the outright lies, then you might like it. But it is definitely not a true account of the author's experiences as trumpeted in the subtitle and text.

Rawicz (through his tabloid journalist ghost writer, Ronald Downing) makes countless outlandish claims that are not supported by any witnesses, documentation, or even detailed descriptions on his part. Moreover, his assertions often defy the laws of science and common sense. Here are but a few examples:

- reaching his destination after wandering a year through 4,000 miles of wilderness with no maps, supplies?
- trekking 12 days across a torrid stretch of the Gobi desert in mid summer with no water or food?
- crossing the Himalayas, summiting mtn after mtn in only worn moccasins and a few ragged articles of clothing?
- encountering a yeti and taunting it like those guys in the beef jerky commercial (no joke-it's in the book!)?
- Rawicz's inability to provide the most basic details about his ordeal such as the first name of one of his closest companions on the trek (the American, "Mr. Smith"!) or where he was finally picked up by the British Army or the hospital he claimed to recover in?

the list goes on and on...

The BBC did an investigation into Rawicz's story and also concluded it was a fraud. They found gov't documents showing that Rawicz was sent to the Siberian gulag for murder (which may or may not be true, but why would he lie?), not trumped-up spying charges as he claims. Soviet documentation also shows that Rawicz was released from the prison camp under Amnesty (along with other Polish prisoners) granted by Stalin in 1942 - so that these prisoners could be used to fight the Germans in the Middle East instead of chopping wood in Siberia. In a letter to the BBC, even Rawicz's own children appear to concede that his account was fictional. I want to emphasize here that my intent is not to diminish the true stories of those who may have survived or escaped from Siberian prison camps during WWII, but this fabrication does more to cast doubt on actual survival stories than legitimize them.

For those interested in fascinating, true, and compelling adventure and survival stories, I recommend the following well-documented accounts: Don Starkell's `Paddle to the Amazon', `The Journals of Lewis and Clark' (edited by DeVoto), and `Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage'.

About the Author

Chittaranjan Ray is Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Interim Director of the Water Resources Research Center, University of Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaii. Prior to joining the University of Hawaii, he worked as a research scientist at the Illinois State Water Survey at the University of Illinois. He received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an M.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Texas Tech University. He was also employed as a staff engineer in the firm of Geraghty & Miller, Inc. in Hackensack, New Jersey (USA) conducting hazardous waste site investigation and water supply development for communities. He is a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He has published 5 books, over 100 scholarly papers, and many technical papers. His research work has been funded by the US National Science Foundation, US Environmental Protection Agency, US Department of Agriculture, US Department of Defense, and other agencies.

Ravi K. Jain is Dean, School of Engineering and Computer Science, University of the Pacific. Prior to this appointment, he has held research, faculty, and administrative positions at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the University of Cincinnati. He received degrees in civil engineering (BS, MSCE) from California State University. He holds a Ph.D. from Texas Tech University and a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University. He has directed major research programs for the US department of Defense and has served as chairman of the Environmental Engineering Research Council, ASCE. He is a member of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, a fellow of ASCE, and a fellow of AAAS. He has been a Littauer fellow at Harvard University and a fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge University. He has published 14 books, over 150 scholarly papers and technical reports, and has received many awards and honors including the US Army’s highest research award and was a recipient of the NSPE Founders Gold Medal and named Federal Engineering of the Year for 1989.

This book contains an excellent review of sustainable drinking water practices, particularly those that are suitable in developing countries. Advancement of effective and reliable drinking water systems is a vital issue with global importance. In this book consideration is given to various treatment technologies that are discussed and vividly described including riverbank filtration, solar pasteurization, membrane desalinization, and solar distillation. In addition, chemical and energy use is discussed as well as the resources, infrastructure, and manpower needed to implement various water systems. Case studies are introduced, which are especially helpful for understanding the appropriate use of the technologies presented. The case studies include detailed descriptions and compilations of project results. Throughout the book schematics, photos, and design calculations are provided to provide guidance to those considering these technologies. Additionally, the entire book has a sustainability focus with discussion on project review and technology decision-making processes with an emphasis on quantifying performance metrics.

Drinking water is a limited resource. This book, "Drinking Water Treatment - Focusing on Appropriate Technology and Sustainability", compares and contrasts different drinking water treatment technologies with an overarching goal to limit the human environmental footprint while preserving a clean water supply for further generations. The book goes into great detail discussing the pros and cons of membrane desalination, riverbank filtration, solar pasteurization and distillation. Throughout the text authors provide an ample amount of examples from around the globe on applications of these technologies in real-world situations.

It is a fascinating and effective book which engages a reader from the introductory chapter. Although being a non-engineer, I found the text easy to follow while extremely informative in context. The text is well referenced and reflective of current research and expert thinking. I can highly recommend this book for anyone interested in drinking water treatment technologies and sustainability. It provides truly comprehensive overview and can be used as a very valuable reference.

About the Author
Harley Race is one of the greatest wrestlers of all time-an eighttime world champion, who has worked all over the globe. He has more than 40 years experience in wrestling, having worked in every major organization and federation (NWA, WCW, WWE, etc.). Race and his wife, BJ, have their own wrestling promotion, World League Wrestling and Race's Wrestling Academy, where he continues to share his knowledge with a new generation of grapplers. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat is a former NWA World Heavyweight Champion and World Wrestling Entertainment Intercontinental Champion. He was also a member of numerous world tag-team champions. His matches with Ric Flair and Randy Savage are considered legendary. He has trained novice wrestlers for more than 20 years. Steamboat currently works as an agent for WWE. Les Thatcher has spent a lifetime in the professional wrestling industry wearing many hats: wrestler, television commentator, innovator, producer, writer, editor, and trainer/teacher. Your First Step Towards Becoming a Pro Wrestler!

Even though I am just a fan of professional wrestling, and have no experience in the business what-so-ever, I still often get asked about how to break into the business. Usually I comeback with, "how the hell should I know?" or "when you find out, tell me please!" From now on whenever somebody asks me that question, my response will be "Buy the Professional Wrestlers' Workout & Instructional Guide!"

A legendary wrestler once said, "to be the man, you got to beat the man!" Well you have to do a lot of hard work before you even get anywhere near the "man". You need to be trained by the man. Well three of these MEN -- Harley Race, Ricky Steamboat & Les Thatcher -- got together and formed the Elite Pro Wrestling Training and began running seminars for trainees. They also decided to write their own textbook, and called it "The Professional Wrestlers' Workout & Instructional Guide" complete with illustrations of Nigel McGuiness & Matt Stryker demonstrating basic wrestling moves.

Not only do the trainers run you through the ins and outs of the current wrestling world, they openly discuss wrestling's top-secret history and compare how things have changed between then and now. The trainers will admit that it was a lot different from the time they broke into the business, but no less tougher for today's wrestlers. Today's trainees have different challenges and obstacles. There is also a detailed run-down on the challenges of developing the right image, including modifying your body type through a tough workout regime and strict diet - honest tips that I have personally never seen in a wrestling book. The absolute best parts of this book are the pictorial demonstrations of about 50 of the most basic moves along with descriptions on how to properly perform the holds. Everything from taking a bump the right way to executing a simple hip toss or body slam; all the way up to more advanced moves such as the figure four leg-lock and atomic drop. That only scratches the surface of things you will learn by reading this book cover to cover.

It is my humble opinion that if you read this book, respect its philosophies, and also have the proper passion and desire for wrestling, there is no doubt in my mind that you will succeed. You may not make it to the WWE but you will find great triumph on the independent circuit.

Rating: 10/10 Highly Recommended to any man or woman who has ever thought about stepping into a wrestling ring. This is a crash course in professional wrestling's basic training procedures. This book should be mandatory reading for anybody who wants to be a wrestler.

Excellent look on the inside of the business!

For anyone looking for a solid book that not only describes the ins and outs of the business, but also looking for what/how much/where, this book is for you. It goes into detail about how to train your body specifically for Pro Wrestling.

I've bought other products before that have talked generally about tips in weightlifting and cardio to do, but never had specifics. This book will give you specific exercises to do, how much to do, and the sets/reps involved. This book also covers reputable schools and gives multiple ways to contact them. For nutrition, it covers what your body needs to cut fat and gain muscle. This book also illistrates mostly all the exercises. About half of this book also illustrates moves to do in the ring and gives great detail on how to do the move.

In conclusion, I highly recommend this book for anyone who's looking to break into the business and start school.
